[The pocketwatch feed comes on suddenly, fixed on a less-than-pleased face, lips pursed in the beginning of a rather sardonic expression. He's figured out that what he has in his hand is a communicator, he just doesn't know who he's communicating with.] I'd like to know whose idea of a joke this is. Because I'm not really seeing the punchline.
[A

[Sam was just passing by, exercising. At her hip sat her Zat'nik'tel, just in case something wandered out of the forest while she jogged by.]
We're all prisoners here, no signs of possible escape. Not even the stars are aligned to anything recognizable.
[She crosses her arms and bites at her lip.]
You mentioned a starship. Which one?
[The uniforms screams: Not Earth.
Or at least... not Sam's and Jack's Earth.]

Prisoners? Prisoners of whom exactly? [Doesn't look very Klingon. He sighs.] I don't exactly have time to be held hostage. I have a sickbay to be running.
[He stops though.]
The Enterprise.
Reply
[Nope, pretty darn human aside from the Naquadah in her blood.] There's good news for you then: Time is frozen back home. It won't move forward without you there. I can assure you of that, from experience.
[A soft, slightly disappointed, sigh.]
Not one I know then.
Reply
[A pause here. Time is frozen. So ah, he might have once scoffed at this, but he has no ground to stand on about time travel problems. He frowns though at the next bit.]
Ma'am, no offense, but where the hell are you from that you don't know the Enterprise; it's the shiniest flagship in the fleet. Are you from some planet outside the Federation?
Reply
[It's definitely convenient. Though it doesn't make Sam any more happy about them all being stuck here.]
I'm from Earth. The only ships we have are the Daedalus, the Odyssey, the Apollo, the Sun Tzu and, formerly, the Korolev and the George Hammond.
Reply
Well, I'm from Earth too. And we've got a hell of a lot more ships than that. Must be a, ah, time issue. [Damn it is he really talking about that sort of thing so casually now.]
Didn't catch your name. Mine's Leonard McCoy. Doctor Leonard McCoy. And at least if time stands still like you say, I won't have a mess of a sick bay to put back together when I find a way out of here.
Reply
[Sam nods a bit.] Time travel is pretty sticky. I've had more than my share of it.
A pleasure to meet you, Doctor McCoy. I'm Samantha Carter, Brigadier General in the US Air Force. [She smiles and nods once more.]
I was surprised when I found out for sure but it's guaranteed.
Reply
[A grimace.] Huh. Tell me about it.
Pleasure's mine, General. [Here he considers.] If you're talking US Air Force then we're definitely looking at a pretty big jump in time.
Reply
[Sam smiles slightly, bemused.] Sam'll do.
[A pause and her smile falters.] How far, exactly?
Reply
[But that question. Hmm.] Let's see. History's not my strong suit. Federation formed at the end of the 21st century. US Air Force was phased out around the same time. But you've got spaceships. Are you capable of faster than light travel yet?
It's the middle of the 23rd century if we're talking in Earth terms instead of star dates.
Reply
That's about 90 years in my future, that your Federation forms then.
[Pausing while she considers.] Now, generally this isn't something I'm supposed to talk about, classified information, but you obviously know about other worlds and starships.
We are capable, yes. Each ship we have is equipped with an intergalactic hyperdrive capable of traveling three-million lightyears in eighteen days.
And God, that really is a large gap in time.

Huh. That time line sounds funny. I suppose it's possible.... [Great. Alternate time lines. Really. Ask him how happy he is about getting up close and personal with messed up history. Even listening to Kirk try to explain the Romulans from the future-but-not-the-same-future gave him a headache.]
The name Zephram Cochrane mean anything to you?
Reply
[Which would he prefer, alternate time lines or alternate realities? Because Sam had to deal with about 15 different versions of herself at one point.]
Never heard it before. Why?
Reply
[A shake of his head.] He's the inventor of the warp drive. I'm beginning to think the time lines we're talking about have a significant split in them.
