When you said you weren't up for moving, Vash-san, my mind immediately went to America-san's injuries. I'm glad that's not the case.

Do you already have a first-aid kit here? If not, this can be a house-warming gift.

No. I almost wish I was hurt physically... I can deal with that form of pain better than this.

[Emotions are tricky things. Vash is glad to have discovered that he has them, but at the same time they keep causing him almost more trouble than they seem worth.]

I already have a few, yes, but more first aid supplies are never a bad thing.

[He manages the slightest of smiles, although it comes across more like a wince than anything.]

...I apologize, Conan-kun. I should have discussed all that I've learned with you first before... Well, before this. I haven't been thinking straight recently.

No, it isn't.

...What prompted it... The simple answer, I suppose, is that I ran into an odd pair the other day. They were collecting water from the river for some reason-- when I asked, the young woman, Dil, mentioned waterboarding. I suppose... that bothered me... the idea of torture.

[That and he's not been in the best mental state-- A part of him wanted to get them angry, to show them that he wasn't afraid... The stupid part that missed his sister and hated the day that was fast approaching. For a country, birthdays weren't necessarily good things.]

Yes. Dil and Tim... the latter of whom didn't seem entirely stable. That and I had a talk with Temper that was a little worrying.

Yes. He told me they... "squandered" their power, I believe that's the exact word that he used.

Haven't you felt it, Conan-kun? A-- an altering in the air, a new tension... The world as we know it has changed.

[Or maybe it's only the perpetually paranoid, centuries old countries that would notice such a subtle shift.]

That is certainly suggestive -- and a risk that I'm surprised they didn't see coming before now.

The experiments have been more frequent and more intrusive ever since Tim and Temper arrived. Recent conversations and the more frequent appearances of the guests have indicated that they're growing in confidence or impatience. You don't need to look to the air to see that things are developing.

...I was surprised as well, until Temper mentioned that they had-- well, he said they had lost interest in us... and even forgot to feed us, or something like that. They probably weren't or aren't paying proper attention. It makes sense, in a way, that beings as powerful and ancient as them would have forgotten to be properly wary.

No, you're right. But it's more than that-- A change in the attitude of the city itself. That's what tipped me off, I guess, that something major had happened...

[He trails off, rubbing the bridge of his nose wearily.]
