The street was...awfully quiet. Quieter than usual. Granted, she wasn't taking a regularly populated route, but it certainly wasn't a back alley of any kind. Conan had a update for her and Reno, and with at least an update on Elraine's status, Elena decided a few minutes to follow up with the local detective could be spared. Especially with Theta's little handiwork ready to go into the Catacombs under Reno's direction. There was so much activity going on in the city, so many things that required her attention, she hadn't slept more than 4 hours the last few days.
Yes, that was the reason why she hadn't slept. It wasn't the increased feeling that she was being watched by invisible eyes, that an angry, hateful aura emanated from windows and reflective glass. Nor was it the sneaking suspicion that she was slowly losing her sanity. Twice now she had seen a flash of leather behind windows and once, after a shower, she had wiped away the steamy fog that had covered the bathroom mirror to reveal green, cat-like eyes watching her beneath a curtain of silver. The shock has sent her reeling backwards, screaming as she hit the floor and scuttled out of the bathroom, clutching at the towel around her middle.
For several minutes she remained seated on the floor, eyes staring at the empty mirror, gasping for air, almost certain of what she saw. Except, whatever it was, it wasn't there any longer. All that remained was the increased panic, a feeling of dread, and burning itch of her scars. That night forward, she avoided anything that would have resulted in her falling asleep, dodged windows and mirrors, and remained silent about what she saw. At least, until she could tell somebody without sounding like a loon.
Her eyes flitted from one side to another, head snapping to one side with every odd or unusual sound, her pace increasing in speed with her heartbeat. She should have called Reno or 202 to meet her and walk with her - but then what sort of excuse would she have to ask for their company? Once again she found herself stupidly taking on a task - no matter how simple - on her own. She'd be find as long as -
Sssssssscccccccrrrrrrreeeeeeeeettttttttcchhhhhhhh...
Elena's body spun violently around, eyes wide as she - and the video - was greeted with a trio of silver-haired men staring at her through the window with malicious smiles, the trio's hands curled into claws from - what she guessed - scratching at the glass on their side. Those who had been in the city long enough would have recognized one as
Loz. Elena's entire body recoiled, shuffling back several steps, as she gave a blood-curdling scream, her hands raising in loosely curled cups to cover her mouth. One by one the trio pushed through the glass as if it were a sheet of liquid silk, first being
Yazoo, then Loz, and finally
Kadaj.
"Hello, little Turk."
With each step they took forward, Elena took one back, honey-colored eyes wide in panic, shock, and absolute terror. "Y-you're not supposed to be here!"
"Didn't you miss us?" Loz asked, mouth curling up as he took a small shuffle forward, earning a rushed shuffle back from Elena.
"We had more games we wanted to play. We were...interrupted last time."
Last time. As in Northern Crater. She and Tseng both had been lucky to survive their brutality, rescued only because of a rouge Vincent Valentine who - by some reason or another - had been around and stumbled upon them. Gaia, she could remember that it took several hits of Cure to maintain consciousness for half an hour and that, no matter how many times they used Cure and Curaga, they could never make the scars go away.
"What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?"
Elena blinked, his voice pulling her from the blood, violence and terror of the Sleeping Forest into the promised blood, violence and terror of the city. The trio had split up, creating an elongated triangle around her, each grinning with their malicious smiles that guaranteed a good deal of pain. Moving slowly, Elena shifted in a tight circle, eyes jumping from one to the next, to the next.
"She's not saying anything."
"Its fine, Loz. We know how to make her scream, don't we?"
"F-fuck you," Elena spat, any and all false bravado lost with the shaking of her voice. "You don't scare me..."
"We don't?" Kadaj asked, taking a few steps forward. Elena, with no room to skirt or move back away from him, leaned back onto her back leg. "I don't believe you. But we can fix that..."
Things shifted within a blink, the feed spun, being forced free from its resting place in Elena's hand, before landing on the cement of the street with an audible 'clink'. The feed continued to roll, the visual twisted to the left from landing on its side. Not that the feed would have seen much besides blurs of black and silver. Several gunshots sound off, the sound ricocheting off the surrounding buildings, followed by another ear-piercing scream which is cut short when the feed is lost.
