I’m hoping that this is some sort of communications device… If anyone can hear, me, my name is Kyouya Ootori. Pleased to make your ( Read more... )

If we knew how we were abducted, we might be able to tell you more about getting home. Unfortunately, everyone here remembers only either the train or finding themselves in the station, Ootori-san.

{{blink-blink. Then says slowly-}} Well, I only remember the station, so that's... helpful, if only slightly.

A train. Hmm.

Oh, yes, what's your name?

Ah, but if you're thinking of following the train tracks out of the city, that's no good either! If you walk down them, somehow you end up in the forest -- and the creatures there are really dangerous.

Edogawa Conan.

A pleasure to meet you, Conan. And I'll be sure to heed your warning.

So how does one find a place to live in this town? And what about food?

You look for a house that's empty and doesn't look like it'll collapse on you and move in. Food, you take what you need from the stores. Our captors ensure that whatever we use is replaced, so there's no need for money.

Mmm. It's that easy?

Ah. The original inhabitants of the city are ... well, whatever happened to them, they're not coming back.

The houses towards the city centre are in the best shape.

{{raises his eyebrows}} How convenient.

Well, then, I'd best be off to the city centre then, hmm? Thank you for all the help.

Oh, yes. Someone on the network told mr you knew something about... the Watcher? Or did I misunderstand?

[Convenient? Conan remembers the account he read of the inhabitant's last moments with a grimace. Not the way I'd put it.]

Good luck, Ootori-san.

You didn't misunderstand. I've been keeping notes on what I learn about the city.

((ack, so sorry I missed this!))

I've got a question for you first, Ootori-san.

Despite the wall, the city's still a really big place and you've got all sorts of people here with all kinds of abilities. The Interloper's claimed before we're here as entertainment -- yet we seldom see him.

How do you think he watches us?

[It's Conan's usual question for new arrivals -- he wants to make sure that he doesn't share information with anyone who can't make use of it. And that means making the connection between the watches and the surveillance of their captors.]

{{it doesn't take him long to come up with an answer}}

He may be watching us from the watchtowers in the wall. If he had advanced enough video cameras, they could pick up the minute details of proceedings in the city. However, the centre of the city would be difficult to see, and it would be near impossible to use audio.

He also could have men of his disguised amongst us to pick up information, but that too is unlikely - we'd notice if a few people periodically disappeared to give information to the Interloper. Although they might be able to communicate privately through the watches...

And then, of course, the obvious answer - he's monitoring the network. Which means that he constantly has the upper hand, since we can't have any secrets from him.

[You haven't disappointed, Ootori-san. Conann nods.]

You got it. So you won't wonder that I'd prefer to ... postphone our discussion? At least until you've got bearings on the city enough that we can choose somewhere to meet and talk in person.

I'd be suspicious of you if you didn't suggest postponing our talk. Just tell me where you are, and I'll find you.
