[Twirling his hair thoughtfully around a finger, Equius purses his lips, mulling over how to explain this] It is an old rivalry, you could say. Sea dwellers are amphibious, with gills upon their sides and ears shaped like fins. Their blood is exclusively shades of purple, and they are rather... psychotic creatures. They rule because they are the most violent, and therefore the most powerful. In my experience, they are completely incapable of self-restraint. One of our number, Eridan, continually throws himself at every one he comes into contact with. It's quite discomforting to watch, and even worse to be his current focus.
It is my personal opinion that Gamzee's blood color is the closest to perfection attainable. The right blend of violence and control required in a true ruler. However, he has received practically no education and spent his life numbing his brain with sopor slime. He is both ignorant and unrestrained, making him extremely volatile when sober.

And you flatter me. [He ducks his head, hiding a small, smug smile] And while I appreciate your support, convincing the others of the same is like to be quite the challenge. Karkat, for all his yelling, whinging, and lewd language holds more sway over the others than I. We had discussed our living arrangements when we first arrived, and all the others wished to join him. I don't understand why...

People in large groups are fools, and they'll usually choose, without a doubt, the option that is the worst for them, uniformly and without doubt.
