The lights were certainly pretty. Even Holmes would have had to admit that. Whether or not the great sceptic would have seen any value in that beauty, or merely criticized the frivolity of the event was up for debate and for once, Conan was leaving that discussion to others.

Wearing the yukata he'd worn for the festival nearly a year ago now, he glanced up at Ran, wondering what she thought of it all. He'd suggested the outing as a relief for both of them -- it'd been days since they'd heard from Elraine, and their concern was growing. Not to mention that if Lavi's plan reached fruition, a relaxing moment like this might not be theirs again for some time. And, as the light of the lanterns caught Ran's face in their glow, Conan realised there was another very good reason to be going to an event with her.

"Do you like the lanterns, Ran-neechan?"

Startled out of her thoughts, the karateka turned her head to smile down at Conan. The golden light from the lanterns shifted from spilling on her face to tangling in her hair, picking out wayward strands in her tight bun.

"Mm!" Still smiling, she carefully arranged herself on the grass next to the little detective, wrapping her hands around her knees. "They're really pretty. And it's been a while since we wore yukata..."

The statement brought a quick pang of homesickness, and Ran held the feeling for a moment before letting it slip away again.

'You can't ever forget that we're prisoners. That any happiness we make here is fleeting. Not to say you shouldn't make friends or enjoy yourself...'She'd been doing her best to take Shinichi's advice to heart since they'd had that conversation. It made life in the City a little more melancholy, true, but at the same time she'd discovered that it made the happy moments all the more poignant and precious. They were temporary, so she had to work harder to appreciate them. Of course, it was ( ... )

Too focussed on the lantern, Kaoru hadn't noticed the newcomers for a fair while until he heard them. Dragging his gaze away from the sky, he turned on the spot, seeking them out, giving a bright grin and a wave.

"Hi~! Wanna come up and join me?"

((Normal weekends are my Thursday and Friday, but I'm back!))

There had been a Tanabana in the city, and Conan had attended -- with Ran. Strange feeling. "Mm, I think so. Maybe not as we know it but ... Vietnam-san and Lenalee-neechan care a lot about-- eh?"

Was that shout aimed at them. Conan craned his neck to look up at the figure still atop the wall. "Kaoru-niisan?"

"Kaoru-san?" Ran blinked and followed Conan's gaze. "Ah!"

She remembered talking to Hikaru and Kaoru - well, at least Hikaru - when the twins had first arrived in the city, but that had been a while ago and she'd only seen them on the watches a couple of times after that. She thought they'd gone home, but if Kaoru was still here...

"Let's go say hello!" she suggested to Conan with a smile, getting to her feet and dusting off her yukata.

Kaoru grinned waving a little more energetically at them - with both arms this time. He was delighted to see the two of them dressed for the occasion.

"Yes! Come up and say hello!"

"We're coming!" Geez ... Kaoru might be a nicer people without his brother around, but Conan hadn't forgotten their first meeting. As he and Ran climbed the stairs to join him on the wall, he was careful to take hold of Ran's hand.

Ran gave Conan's hand a light squeeze and carefully picked her way up the stairs, making it to the top without incident. She smiled at the Hitachiin twin.

"Hi, Kaoru-san. It's been a while."

Kaoru shifted up a little with an apologetic smile.

"I kind of don't remember anything about the last time I was here so..."

"Kaoru-niisan, this is Ran-neechan. We're from the same Tokyo -- in fact, I'm staying at Ran-neechan's father's Detective Agency. Ran-neechan -- ah, I guess I don't have to introduce Kaoru-niisan."

"We didn't actually talk," Ran explained, picking a seat for her and Conan. "But I talked a little to Hikaru-san, and he told me about you."

"All good, I hope!" Kaoru grinned, moving up a few bits and pieces so they could sit comfortably. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ran-san. Did you two come to watch the light show, or to take part in it?"

Conan raised an eyebrow, but decided that if Kaoru hadn't suspected the sort of show that he and his twin might put on on arrival to Ruby City, then he certainly wasn't going to bring it up. "I'm here to watch! Ran-neechan, do you want to make a light?"

"I wouldn't mind," Ran enthused. "Ah, but we didn't bring any materials..."

"Already ahead of you~!" Kaoru trilled, rifling through the stack of lanterns he'd already made up. "There's ink as well, if you want to write on them. Or you could just watch. That's fine, too!"
