England gave him directions, so Canada's next stop was America's place. He walked up to the door, Kumajiro at his heels as always, and knocked.

England had said America was working on something or other, but Canada figured he wouldn't mind the interruption.

America lives in a blue-shuttered, first floor apartment that looks out towards the park.

At the sound of the knock, America pauses mid hammer stroke and straightens. He's fixing up a game table for his classy blue living room. (Guess what other two colors the bedrooms are.)

He swings the door open as he answers, staring blankly for a moment as he looks at his own reflection. Then... grin. "...Mattie? That you?"

Canada grins back, nodding. "Hi, Al," he says with a little wave. "England gave me directions to your place, hope that's all right."

Behind his brother he can see blue walls - somehow, he has the feeling other rooms are painted red and white.

"Yeah, it's no problem." America grins and backs inside, waving his brother in. He kicks the door shut, sauntering back into his living room. He has made the place nice: a long sofa, several posters on the walls (scavenged from houses of those that have left), a counter with stools separating the room from a kitchenette to the right, a half fixed-up game table and minibar.

"Man, it's been awhile. When did you get back? You've been to see the old man already?"

Canada follows America in, glancing around the room. It looks a lot like how he might expect America to decorate - which is not a bad thing. It suits him; no need to change it.

"Just today, actually - though I don't remember anything about being here before. I'm trying to find out about it, if I can. I just came from Arthur's, yeah, and I was with Francis and Barclay before that." He's glad, in a sense, that they were all here; no one had really had much time for visiting lately, the troubles of the world keeping them all busy. That's one bright side to this mess, whatever England says.

He pauses, silent for an instant before his grin amps up, hiding the uncertainty. Heroes don't need to show that. "Huh. Yeah, it's strange, but sometimes that happens." He fiddles with the coffee machine, because yay, someone that won't call him uncultured for not having tea. Not that he cares.

"What'd they say?"

"Well, no one's said much yet - Papa said it's a long story that probably needs more time, and Arthur, well, he seems to hate almost everything about this place, so he didn't seem like the best one to ask." He almost tells America what England had said about the two of them, but decides against it for the moment. He's not sure anyone else has been officially told yet, so he'll wait and see if America brings it up.

Canada tries to sound nonchalant, even though he is actually really bothered about this gap in his memory that he didn't even know was there. "Something wrong, Al?" Because there's something a bit forced about that bright grin just now. He knows his brother too well, sometimes. What's going on? Is there something he's not supposed to know?

"Ah... this place is just weird," America says, turning on the coffee pot and leaning back against the counter. "Those in charge of the place throw all sorts of changes at us. It's like being a lab rat." He shakes his head. "I'm surprised that Francis didn't rush to tell you everything."

It is not that you can't know - you knew before. Only, he would rather you didn't. It just made things... far too complicated, especially now that he is trying to get over what happened.

"I figured that out when I woke up on a train with a pocketwatch communicator," Canada points out dryly. "England mentioned that they like to do stuff - he also said that's how the two of you ended up in the catacombs."

But Canada doesn't pursue that. Because something is up. "Alfred. What don't I know about? And should I know about it?"

"Yeah, they like to do stuff," he agrees, recalcitrant and clearly surprised that England had mentioned the catacombs first. Oh, look, a distraction!

"Things that aren't always good, really, but the catacombs turned out alright. Especially once we got away from all of those shadows..." He makes a face, trying to conceal how genuinely he thought they were ghosts at first. He isn't doing well.

"Is there anything I should be on a particular lookout for?" Canada asks. "And what was wrong with the shadows? All I really know about that is that a boy you know, John, saw you and England coming out of them."

He also knows that England and America were together, but he doesn't know if that had started it or not.

"Hm? Oh, they were spooky. Like being in a haunted house." And oooh, did he hate that. Fortunately, the catacombs got better.

"John told you? Oh, I thought it was England that mentioned... less surprising, that. He's a cute kid; seems like he's been through a lot for his age."

He looks down and away, brows lowered in thought.

"Yeah, John was the first to mention it. He does seem like a nice boy - fascinated with the idea of us as nations. Why I can't tell, his home seems far more interesting. And England... Actually..." He hesitates, and then decides to just go for it.

"England also said that, well, that you two are trying out a relationship."

There is a pause, and then he turns back around.

"I'm surprised he mentioned it first," he says candidly, turning and leaning back against the counter with his cup of coffee, freshly brewed. He motions at the pot, an informal invitation - there is still some left. "It hasn't been very long at all. Just since the catacombs."

"I think maybe I took him by surprise or something; I was surprised he answered too."

He nods in response to America's gesture; he likes coffee too, and neither England nor France really drinks it. "I told him it was about time, based on how you two are back home."

Sure. Here, have some coffee. It is something to think about besides how awkward and nervous he still is about this. He does not like feeling this way, but it certainly is better than some months ago. "Hah! I'm sure he just loved that. Though, you think so? It's... different here. I'm not sure if it would have happened, back home." At least, definitely not like this.
