[Temper's face appears on the communicator in its typical impassive expression. There's a faint shade of a polite smile on his lips, but that's all. Some of you have been busy, haven't you? Well, at least you look busy -- in the same way a gerbil on a wheel looks busy, and with about as much to show for it. But it is nice to see liveliness. Even if ( Read more... )

A celebration? That seems a bit out of place in a city like this but who am I to judge, when I've hardly been here a month.

Out of place? Ah, but joy and misery exist everywhere there's life, I think. One can't dwell too much on either. Life is balance. Even in a place like this.

I beg to differ. In my career, I've seen plenty of places that nearly forgot the meaning of joy.

A tragedy then, and a failing. [He hums softly.] There are great and terrible things that have happened in the history of the world I am from. There are also triumphs, jubilation. But neither is free of being tainted by the other, in one way or another.

Quite the tragedy, we've done what we could for them but their future is their own. [A pause. This is as good a chance as any for gathering information.] Your world?

There is only so much that can be done at times. [He nods at the question though.] That's right. Our world -- as it one was, anyway.

For some reason, since October is so close, "celebration" makes me think: Oktoberfest XD talkstomuch September 20 2011, 04:18:49 UTC
I can't deny that.

[Sam discreetly moves a notebook closer to her.] Would you tell me about it? As a scientist, I'm afraid my curiosity can be insatiable.

[He sees the evening and tilts his head just curiously.] Hmm. Are my answers interesting enough to take note of?

You're welcome to, of course. But we ought to be introduced first, don't you think? I'm Temper Vale. I don't believe I've gotten your name yet.

But to answer your question, yes. I'll tell you about where I'm from.

Lol, truthfully I just want a legitimate reason for Sam to get drunk XD talkstomuch September 20 2011, 04:54:34 UTC
I like to have records. And who knows what I might learn, I'd hate to forget anything.

I apologize. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Vale. I'm General Samantha Carter.

I appreciate that, thank you.

XDD well we do actually have a festival sort of event coming up so, have at it, Sam! tempervale_npc September 20 2011, 05:30:11 UTC
Fair enough.

The pleasure is mine, General Carter. [He shakes his head.] It's hardly an imposition. I don't mind conversations; when they're good, I rather enjoy them.

But I'm afraid you may not find my answers very interesting. What can I tell you, about the world my kin and I are from?

I'll have to hope I can provide stimulating enough conversation then.

[Let's see, there's plenty of things she'd like to ask.]

The name, for starters maybe? Also the seasons and climate, notable star constellations, the kind of plant and wildlife that were native there. The level of technological advancement: was it as developed as this city, moreso or less?

[Sam has switched to Scientist Mode.]

I'll have to hope I can do the same.

[He waits until she's finished asking.]

Earth. The climate and seasons varied depending greatly on where one was, of course. Constellations? I never paid much attention. The big dipper? And the little one. And the 12 of the zodiac I suppose. It was the early 21st century, and I like to think our technology was quite a bit more advanced than that of this place.

Another Earth? A lot of people seem to come from one version or another.

So your Earth has developed much the same as my own. [She jots this down anyway. It could prove to be important someday and she's had experience with alternate realities back home anyway.]

Many do, yes. Quite a few of the worlds represented here are very similar.

[Another almost smile.] Did it? Not surprising, I suppose.

Similar but never the same. I could spend quite a bit of time compiling information and still be fascinated.

I'm sure that's but one similarity. There's likely to be many differences.

It's my experience that there is often a great deal more similar than different. But you're correct really, it's the differences that are often the fascinating part -- to see a thing we take for granted as a given truth turned upside down.
