Sherlock Fanbook Letter

Dear Benedict,

I apologise in advance for my incoherent fangirl ranting - I tend to gush when it comes to Sherlock and your wonderful interpretation of Holmes! I have never watched a series so many times in so short a period (I’m up to about twelve viewings of each episode now).

The way you portray Sherlock is by far the best of the recent adaptations - I’d even go as far to say that only Jeremy Brett can measure up to you! As a massive Sherlock Holmes fan, I couldn’t wait for the show, and you certainly didn’t disappoint! I loved all the little quirks you gave the character, and all those deadpan comments! Your chemistry with Martin Freeman is wonderful too. Thank you so much for making my Sunday nights so exciting, and giving us a Holmes charismatic enough to encourage my friends to read the original stories.

I have to admit, I’d only seen you in Fortysomething before Sherlock (though I remember loving that too - especially when Rory visited the homeless shelter), but I’ve been looking at your other work since then and it’s all been fantastic. Amazing Grace and Stuart: A Life Backwards were simply incredible, and I really enjoyed watching Small Island too. To The Ends Of The Earth was amazing, and the short film Inseparable very nearly made me cry. I could keep going like this forever, but I’m going to stop here before you start thinking I’m some crazy stalker.

I hope that you’re well, and that you keep creating such wonderful characters for us to enjoy. Good luck in everything you do (I can’t wait for War Horse), and I hope you don’t feel intimidated by the sheer volume of fan love you’re undoubtedly getting now - you’ve made so many people happy, and sadly there’s no way of repaying you for that.

Thanks for making the world a far brighter place,

Karen Elson
