We had our annual Labor Day BBQ in our court on Sunday night. About 12 different families showed up for the festivities. Everyone brings their own meat and also brings either a side salad, dessert, paper products, drinks, or fixings. We never actually coordinate any of those things but somehow it always works out that we have everything we need. Great food and good company. The kids run around all evening and love the fact that they get to stay out until 9:30-10pm; the men talk trash and smoke cigars; and the women talk about their families and the start of school. The unofficial host of the party (the neighbor whose yard we gather in) always fixes margaritas for the adults sometime after we eat and before people with young kids or babies start to head home. Then around 10:30 or so, after the kids are all sent to bed, the men fire up the grills again in preparation for the midnight sausages. Sometimes the midnight sausages happen a little earlier if we're all tired. It's a fun tradition but for some reason people look at us strangely when we talk about our midnight sausages. Like our newest neighbors for instance. They moved into our court last month so we were all happy to finally meet them when they came out to the party. I think they thought we were all a little bit odd but they did partake of the margaritas and cigars. We couldn't convince them to stay for the midnight sausages though.
