DD's London Update

Jul 05, 2008 15:41

I finally got my first call from DD last night around 5pm my time, 10pm her time. She was very happy and apologetic for not calling sooner but she said it's been really fun and hectic. (Luckily the other parents of kids in the delegation have been sending out emails to everyone with updates whenever they here from their own children so at least I've know what she's been doing. But it sure was good to hear from DD personally!)

Here's her recap of the first few days:
- They went to some underground cave that was hand built by the Druids over 3,000 years ago. She said the cave and tunnels were really creepy and scary because they went really far underground, and they were told that the Druids used it for animal and human sacrifices. The deepest part was 150 feet below the surface.
- They ate pasta for both lunch and dinner the first day so she said no pasta for her when she gets home!
- They heard some Parliament guy speak, saw the Changing of the Guards and the horses, and had lunch at a Medieval Castle with Henry the VIII. DD said lunch was chicken, rice, potatoes, and vegetables and was really good!
- They saw the Crown Jewels and DD commented that Queen Victoria must have had a really small head because her crown was so small! She saw the biggest diamond (from India) in the scepter and the 2nd largest in the crown. DD loved the Crown Jewels gift shop and thought the items there were "exquisite but really expensive." She really wanted to buy something there but knew her mom would kill her if she spent that much money. Smart girl!
- Dinner that night was fish and chips (really good fish!) near the theatre. They saw "Lord of the Rings" and DD thought it was a great show except for the huge spider! She said it was really big like Aragon in Harry Potter.
- They took a cruise on the River Thames and rode the London Eye. She said they did a lot of shopping, and she's already bought all of us souvenirs.
- They went to a school yesterday morning and played cricket and met lots of kids and exchanged email addresses. They sang patriotic songs on the bus for the 4th of July. Then they went to a War room, which she said was OK, but not that exciting. The virtual tour was fun though.
- DD said her roommate is from Michigan and is really small and quiet. They had to pack up last night because they will be moving to a new hotel today. She said her suitcase is about to pop open!
- One thing she wasn't happy about was the requirement to write in the travel journal. She thought it was optional but it isn't so she was going to spend the evening getting caught up in it. (She's not really fond of writing.)

All in all she's having a great time and sounded really happy. And I feel much better after hearing her voice! She said she'd try to call again when they get to Paris. I'm hoping she'll call before that!
