The Raven - Kuroshitsuji Style

Aug 24, 2009 12:45

Just a little something I've been wanting to do, my own translation from the first page of chapter 14, compleat with a few observations..

ある嵐模様の夜のこと夢も希望も失われた真夜中のこと
aru arashi moyou no your no koto yume mo kibou mo ushinawareta mayonaka no koto
It was a stormy night, in the dead of night when my dreams and hopes were lost.
亡霊に取り憑かれた僕の頭上舞い込んだ一羽の大鴉
bourei ni toritsukareta boku no zujou maikonda ichiwa no oogarasu
As I was possessed by the spirits of the dead, a Raven appeared above me. bourei - 亡霊 - (n) ghost; the dead; departed spirits; apparition;
toritsukareru - 取り付かれる - (v) to become obsessed with; to be possessed (by spirits, etc.); to be obsessive compulsive (OCD)
鴉 - karasu - crow; raven
大鴉 - oogarasu - Literally, "Large crow/raven", but also the Japanese title of The Raven.
何かを夢見る様な瞳でその大鴉は言うのだ
nanika wo yumemiru you na hitomi de sono oogarasu wa iu no da
With eyes that seemed to be dreaming of something, that Raven said this: Quoth The Raven: And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamplight o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!

"失われたものは戻らない"
"ushinawareta mono wa modoranai"
"That which is lost will not return"
"NEVERMORE"
Note: The text above "Nevermore" just says もう 二度と/mou nidoto, which is how you would say "Nevermore" in japanese.
Also, compare this panel to this one from chapter 19.
And this: Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.
Ciel's birthday, and therefore "the incident", are in December.
