fringe

went to the bushwick art project a couple of weeks ago. it was between east williamsburg and bushwick, in a bit of a dodgy area littered with warehouses. interestingly a friend bought a foreclosed house there a couple of years ago and the area is apparently up-and-coming hipster heaven. it turned out to be really cool, with weird and wonderful motion dust activated music pieces - which translated analogue stimuli into digital sound. my favourite was this dust-activated piece. there were also conceptual pieces like splicing bits of radio sequences into outta this world sounds, and various mise-en-scenes set to music/ noise. at the top floor of the warehouse space, there was a dance space with electronic bands round the clock from 4pm to 6am. i loved the bar space with revolving disco balls that spelt out inane phrases that was totally mesmerizing.

unfortunately, the 'body' show as ps1 wasn't half as inspiring nor engaging. with the 'body' as theme and canvas, it descended from eroticization of the human form to deformation of the body through piercings, endoscopes, shootings, death and decay. it was definitely visceral but a bit tired. they had warhol's sleep and empire state thrown in for good measure. a good place to see rarely exhibited pieces, but i'm not sure about seeing them altogether. much better was people watching at the 'warm-up' event in the courtyard. there was this guy in berms and a really thin tie, oblivious to the summer heat.

gawd i love the fringe scene here...
