vision

caught golden venture at the tribeca film festival, a documentary about the lives of illegal chinese immigrants and their voyage into the US. it will probably never be distributed commercially as it is more a social, political statement rather than entertainment.

the story traced the journey of 4 immigrants who walked across myanmar on foot to bangkok, where they boarded a human freighter which travelled across the atlantic and pacific in less than human conditions. their troubles had only begun when their freighter ran aground in new york. those who made it work 13 hour days and have no rights nor benefits of citizenship, even thought they are hard-working residents contributing to the economy.

saw margaret leng-tan's recital at an art studio. it was a cosy, intimate concert with around 50 people sitting around a grand piano in a gallery space. she was an intense performer, technically so-so (she paused when she made a mistake on one of the pieces and gamely started from the beginning), but infused the avant-garde with a lot of feeling and lyricism. she was clearly passionate about somei satoh, a fringe japanese composer (who was interestingly self-taught), who composed using minimalist motifs, but in grand romantic style; which sort of mirrored tan herself.

it's amazing how the city can accommodate great divergence and how individuals pursue their own vision with singular determination.
