mon to fri: rain
probably one of the most miserable weeks so far. it was pouring day and night and the roads were flooded. took more than an hour to get to work each day. i just cannot understand why the roads aren't repaired to drain away the water properly - it's insane how these people stand for this struggle with the elements every time it rains. i mean, this country/ state has more than enough money to do this for chrissakes!
fri: north indian
north indian cooked by a friend in east village. yummy.
sat: high art-low key
woke up to glorious sunshine :-) brunch at westville in the village. had a burger and a homemade oreo - sinful! then off to chelsea for a spot of gallery hopping. the hordes were out in full throng. the gagosian had a show of lichtenstein's sculptures. pop was probably what he was best known for but he does have a quirky eye for perspective. mary boone had a show of jay davis' collages, which looked deceptively easy to do but were pretty intricate at closer glance, featuring tord boontje-esque motifs. charles cowles had an edward burtynsky show, which was a series of large format photographs featuring china themes. he has a great eye for evocative landscapes and patterns. made a pit stop at the nautical-themed maritime hotel before heading for home. wanted to stop by billy's bakery but there was a long line.
had friends over in the evening. everybody doesn't seem to stop talking about flipping properties these days. i mean, this was like singapore in 2001 - caught in the classic middle class trap of buying and selling properties, spirally deeper into debt and illiquidity. there was zee and husband hang, dd, taylor and e, jake and disney. dd was telling us about his new asian clients, who were just getting into the lifestyle thingie - so he's drawn for them a cocktail lounge, a dining room, a home theatre and a mahjong room! which was quite hilarious. disney liked my music - am into this synth pop group figurine at the moment - they've got some pretty strong songs that are reminiscent of omd and human league. there's this track called you duct taped my heart which is completely addictive. great evening.
sun: brooklyn bound
another glorious but windy day. walked about cobble hill, park slope and dumbo. had the most amazing chocolate souffle cake at sweet melissa, while
32pencils had the most incredible chocolate cupcake with peanut butter topping. super yums. visited dd's pad in park slope. i loved the way he managed the space - hope he manages to flip it. met yuki, a lighting designer, and ute, a domestic staffer (she hires chaffeurs, butlers, chefs for the rich and famous). she was telling us about this gorgeous head housekeeper of this taitai's household who was a glamorous filipino PhD with movie star looks; and how this taitai's in-house chef earns US$150k a year, cooking 2 dinners and 3 lunches a week, with compulsory trips to st tropez as part of her entourage! maybe i should attend culinary school. gawd. these people have so much money they don't know what to do with it.
visited the prague kolectif in dumbo. beautiful but overpriced restored eastern european deco pieces. yummy beef hor fun at satay, a malaysian restaurant nearby - almost as authentic as sin hoi san.
