[& NFL: Hope is a dangerous and wonderful thing]

The last pre-season game was played last night. And even the teams that lost, fans are rabid.

They're going to go to the playoffs.

They're going to the Super Bowl.

It's like this every year. It, ironically makes me smile. It's nice...until it all comes crashing down by Week 6.

Main concern (or media coverage) has focused on 3 things--Peyton Manning playing, Eagles and how boss they're supposed to be, and Chris Johnson's contract. Johnson signed a contract two days ago for mad bank--about $30million guaranteed, the over all number is stupid, you can't even be sure he'll last that long--but he hasn't played in the preseason. How he'll hold up is a giant question mark for everyone. I think he'll be fine personally. Johnson will get off to a slow start before blowing the doors off Week 4.

The Eagles are the new Cowboys, the new Jets, the team that every and any team is supposed to fear. I wonder why NO ONE remembers that those teams never went to the Super Bowl and won it. Pre-season hype is just that--hype. The Eagles won't go the Super Bowl. The Eagles won't win it this year. And if they do, I'll buy a Micheal Vick jersey, honest to goodness. It'll be the teams that people aren't watching that will be amazing.

So my over-all football man crush had neck surgery and I'm sure that he will break his starting streak to sit out and not die. Peyton Manning may be awesome but he's not stupid. A neck is important as hell and he just had babies and wait, he's 35 and has at least 3-4 years left. He's not going to risk paralysis considering right now I can play about 20% as well as their left guard (considering I figure I'm about 2% of an NFL guard in talent, skill, and thought process, that's bad) and that's his blind side. Kerry Collins who was sitting on the couch a few weeks ago doesn't look *as bad* as I expected and really all they need him to do is take care of the football and nothing else. Do I think he'll win another Super Bowl? I'm on the fence but by Zeus I hope so. The Peyton Mannings/Tom Bradys/Phillip Rivers of the world do not come along all the time. Jim Kelly (Bills) and Dan Marino (Dolphins) leaving destroyed the franchise. Indy? Whatever you think of the man, he changed the game. He's a mutant, insane, flat out the best quarterback in league in mechanics and sheer talent (I didn't say had the best team, I said best quarterback, that goes to Tom Brady. You cannot tell me Peyton Manning had the defense or the receivers he had) that took a meh franchise, strapped it on his back and pretty much is 75% of the reason they win 10-12 games every year. Lose that and you lose the Colts for the next twenty years.

Carson Palmer has balls the size of Saturn. "No, fuck you. All of you suck and you don't want to get better so I'm walking away from $46 million." I would come in and work for SMU for $46 million and that football team is a lesson in futility. Probably sure he's going to report on Saturday after the Bengals' roster is full and they have to cut him. Hopefully the Dolphins pick him up. I doubt it though because they're not that smart. More on that later.

As far as the division and teams I personally care about--the AFC East--things look tough if you're Miami or Buffalo. Or rather if you're just Miami. I have them going 4-12. Mike and Mike in the Morning have them going 3-13. I guess that means I'm optimistic. Buffalo is looking better with CJ Spiller, the Jets had nice pre-season moves and we know the Patriots acquired Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco. The Dolphins...signed Reggie Bush and let go of their two main running backs.

Yeeeeah. Did I mention the Patriots open the season against the Dolphins on Monday Night Football Week 1? I'm seeeeeeeew excited for that game /sarcasm. Embarrassed on a national level, just what I love to see. If you look in Finsiders or Miami Herald however, everyone has that hope I was just talking about. "Look what Detroit did! We can do that! We got this!"

You do know that's pre-season right? And that the Dolphins went 4-0 in the Pre-season the year they went 1-15 and that the Colts lose most of their pre-season games and make it to the play offs ALL THE TIME? Though what Detroit did--wow. They went in that game like it was a playoff game the first quarter and brought the kitchen sink, the front door, the couch, the dinning room table and the washing machine. Brady looked pissed though it's pre-season; that's a "Shit that sucks but eh, doesn't count" moment not "My boyfriend is leaving me while I'm 6 months pregnant" moment.

It is not too soon for that joke. Still, they'll be fine. Much to my chagrin but I give credit where credit is due. Though why is there going to be a 2 hour documentary on their coach? Besides everyone in Boston, who the hell is going to go watch that?

Like I said above, Carson Palmer should come to the Dolphins. Bandage player until they draft a goddamn quarterback that doesn't suck. Since they'll be competing with Carolina in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes in my opinion, they need to draft him and NOT another goddamn O-lineman. Or a any quarterback. Please. Chad "Checkdown" Henne is just...I mean.../pinches bridge of nose...I don't even want to talk about it.

Deepak, one of my friends from work who's from Malaysia and lived in Boston for about six years asks me all the time, "Why don't you just become a fan of a team that wins?". Answer: That's not what a fan does. It's an abusive relationship. You think they'll change and nope, but you still stay and hope. Right now though is the stand off in the kitchen, arms crossed and glaring with Jeff Ireland and the Dolphins and more than just me. Probably why I love Peyton Manning so much, it's nice to like someone and actually have them win and not display ineptitude every Sunday.

Fantasy football leagues with more than 12 are fun and infuriating. Holy hell you end up with some bad, bad, bad ish at the end. Two leagues this year, work and home, and my home league doesn't look bad. Drew Brees and Josh Freeman as my QBs and I even have a few Patriots on there.

Yes, I took a shower afterwards. Yes, I feel dirty. But yes, I want to win.

Back to the grind.

Good Night and Good Luck.
