Okay, instead of editing my last entry, I figured I'd just explain myself in a new one.
I think what really meant to say wasnt "shape note singing", its not the notation that fascinates nor puzzles me; I can sing according to square notes! I was referring to the haunting sound produced, the actual style of singing. I suppose its worth remembering that most "folk music" in the world is atonal to our ears, as if we've been spoiled by the compositions of J.S. Bach.
