I totally agree that Ken has let his model fly with other pilots and designers. I have "extended" his model in two significant ways: All Persons AQAL (AP-AQAL), and All Domains AQAL (AD-AQAL). I am happy that he is no longer interested, having "shot his load", but there are significant and beautiful things beginning to happen to IT as a result of AP/AD.
There are many traditionalists who see me as a Wilber-detractor, but it is the opposite. His AQAL Square is perfect as it is - a First Tier model. And guess what - he is happy with that too. I am building on his good foundations. So it comes to this: Ken's critics are not Ken's successors, because they only have critique to offer, which is good in its limited context.
Ken's successors are those who are building the extra floors on an already good foundation. For me personally, this is peaking out at present in Integral Relativity, as a bridge between IT and the New Sciences. The findings of IR so far are that Ken once again gets its partially right, but not right enough to bring the New Sciences on board with IT - until now. So despite my own critic's complaints that I am making it all more complicated than Ken, complexity is actually needed to deal with the avalanche of information pouring down on us. Even so, IR is simple enough for the Turquoise New Sciences, so it means that the Integral community needs to get off their butt and get with the progressive new programs. I have a feeling Ken is smiling quietly...
I, too, have tweaked his models somewhat. I disagree with him in two very basic ways.
1. His definitions of the right-hand quadrants are lacking in exactly the ways that Mark Edwards outlines (though Edwards doesn't go far enough, in that "behaviors" would be the mental counterparts, and various kinds of spiritual "radiation of essences" (for lack of a better--or any other--term) would be above that. Wilber's "right-hand" quadrants are simply the lower structures, and these affect and are affected by higher evolution through upward and downward causation; they are not laterally related. This changes the very nature of what AQAL would mean and how holistic practice would be approached, because "all levels, all quadrants" sees double representation in the physical and biological, and behaviors, spiritual energy projection, and the like get nothing.
2. In terms of Spiral Dynamics, Yellow is the first transpersonal stage. I could go into detail (which I will in my own works), but this is basically reflected in the "enormous gulf of meaning and understanding" between first tier and second. It's a completely different set of tools in second-tier/transpersonal reaities.
But these tweaks are from a space of shared understanding, and so--as you say--are a positive build on the accomplishments of Wilber, not a tearing down of his work.
