Made a monster batch of sauce today. For those of you that don't make such things, it is common to not follow a recipe and to never have two batches come out the same. Changes depend on what is available - fresh vs. dried spices/herbs, which type of onion used, mushrooms - fresh or dried, pork, chicken, turkey, or beef? (Just to name a few.) Today I used two specific ingredients I've never used before and I'm trying to figure out if one of 'em (or both) caused the über tang. Generally my sauce is savory but mellow. Today it has a new tang - something I've never done before. The taste reminds me of eating at
Bove's or the
Kraft Special Classics Tangy Italian Spaghetti dinner crap someone fed me as a kid.1 I'm wondering if it came from the spices (did I add too much of something) or was it one of the new ingredients? The sauce isn't bad. Hell, it never comes out bad. I just don't want the tang.
Any idea what caused it? Have you experienced this?
The reason I made the sauce was to cheer myself up a little (see previous post) and to distract my brain. The multi-track system in my head is preoccupied. Andiamo. Allons-y. Andiamo. Allons-y. Over and over and over and over. Allons-y leads me to think about
fairylogic and
Doctor Who. Andiamo leads me to think about my first few hours in Italy. (A happy, happy thought.) Hell, the whole thing is a happy thought. I love Aimee. She's a kindred spirit. We are getting these matching tattoos in a few days. Allons-y. Andiamo. They mean the same thing - one in French, the other in Italian. My first day in Italy I knew I'd get this tattoo. It was inevitable.
Over the years I've searched out thousands of fonts but never found one that spoke to me. The correct font for a message is critical. (The same word in Comic Sans does not convey the same thing in Times New Roman.) In 2007 I acquired a copy of a book created in 1522 by an Italian (in Italian, of course) - a book teaching script/calligraphy. The writing is beautiful. I had forgotten about it and came across it the day after I set the tattoo date with
fairylogic. I truly believe my spirit guides put that book in my path at that time. It was perfect. While the book does not have andiamo written, I was able to Pshop it together.
I showed it to Aimee and she wanted allons-y in the same font. (Insert fangirl squee here.) Hers came out awesome. Better than mine. (I'm still tweaking mine. The M and the kerning don't feel right yet.)
Before anyone pokes me for getting the tattoo and being unemployed, don't do it. I set the money aside in an envelope years ago while working. Also, I promised the tat to myself when I hit 50 lbs. lost. As of today I'm at -68 lbs. So dammit, I deserve it. I've earned ink. ;)
1This stuff was not Italian, nor was it food. Eeeew. The "sauce" is made with 2 cups water, a 6 oz. can of tomato paste, and their seasoning packet. Boil for 10 minutes. Really.
