Huh? Russia already has nukes, tons It's not an issue if they want more (although it'd be nice if they had less). They are just as to say "Hey your missile defense can never stop us!"... Not that it actually could in the first place, but hey... :/
Well, it's the developing of new delivery systems that I have a problem with. If we're trying to keep nuclear war from happening, building unstoppable nukes is not helpful except in the mutually-assured-destruction sense. I'm all for upgrading current nuclear arsenals to be more secure, but Putin seems to be running Russia headlong back into Cold War-ish territory.
Yes, however its reactionary. You see putting Missle Defense in Europe is to give the USA a strategic advantage over Russia. The thing is here man, Russia thinks MAD is a good idea (it means neither side can afford to nuke the other), the USA isn't doing anything to stop MAD either, it's just that they want the defense system to prevent accidental attacks or small-scale launches from rouge nations or terrorists.
The Missle Defense system cannot stop the Russian arsenal. It just can't. But, you see if there's a perception that it might some day, or hinder MAD greatly thus giving the US a window for pre-emptive strikes someday. I suppose the Russian military deems it need to respond, for their own security interests.
Well, I never said that I agreed with the US's missile defense shield either. I think building new missiles and spending money on near-useless defense system are both stupid and not helping.
I don't know how our defense screen is being built to counter terrorist missiles - last I checked it was still aimed at ballistic missiles, and if there's going to be a nuclear terrorist attack it isn't going to be with one of those.
Yes however you could consider terrorists hijacking a system or stealing one. Long-range nukes have their advantages, they don't need to operate in the US carrying around uranium/plutonium. Anyway, it's just one possibility they would like to prevent with the system.
Personally, the missile defense is a great idea. Do you know how many times there has almost been an accidental nuclear launch in Russia? And what about unstable countries such as North Korea, if they pressed the button the only option to be had would be hitting them back. With missile defense more peaceful options open up.
The TROUBLE with missile defense is the lack of cooperation... And you can blame whoever you want for that.
Well, also that the missile defense system wasn't that great even without this new delivery system. It's just not that accurate. A lot more work is needed before it can be a reliable shield.
I just think Russia should be focusing on upgrading its security and launch systems rather than building new ones. There's still a ton of old nukes there that need destroying or more secure lockups.
