Heads up! I'm off to cambodia in a bit, won't be back till the 17th. I've got friends already there, but i'll be flying there alone and will have to entertain myself for a day. I'm vaguely nervous! It's the first time i'm travelling alone. Anyway, i'm pre-travel jittery (i normally am, packing last minute and getting a little too excited to sleep) so i'm just going to ramble on for a bit -

recently read: The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch: - Relatively new author i think, with 5 planned for the series and the third one on it's way. It's kind of like a fantasy heist novel, the lead character is essentially a con man - a thief. It basically hit quite a few of my fantasy kinks - morally ambiguous but honorable lead character, political intrigue, spies and thiefs and underworlds, lots of twists (im not very fast at spotting these things, so i had quite a few aha moments) I liked the structure of the novel, i liked the plot. It reminded me of Feist and Wurts - the Mara of Acoma series? Which still remains one of my favourite trilogies ever - going up against odds against you, and winning through somehow, and the summary for the next novel seems to imply Locke going up against a superpowered guild of magicians. If i can find the next book at the airport my first day in cambodia is going to be sitting in a nice cafe reading.

Went to catch Urinetown by the Lasalle musical theatre students yesterday - and i was really impressed. I have to admit that a large part of it was the way it was staged - the set was very minimalistic but effectively used, and i'm a complete sucker for the pretty. The cast was pretty spot on, it didn't look like a school musical - and it was the supporting baddy characters that really stole the show for me. (One of them looked eerily similar to David Anders. (Sark from alias? Takezo Kensei from Heroes?)) Save your money and forget about the ridiculous upcoming musicals at the Esplanade (flying cars? a queen musical???)and just catch this.
