I gave up fish once for a semester or so in college, but then I returned to my normal vegetarian-except-for-kosher-fish self.
But, I'm considering giving it up again.
Pros:
- I don't need to eat fish.
- Apparently there's a lot of slavery in the global fishing industry.
- The Orthodox Union says you can't trust fish labeling in the U.S.; even if the menu claims that an item is a kind of fish that you know to be kosher, you can't really assume that the item is made of kosher fish.
- Apparently overfishing is a serious environmental problem.
- Many kinds of fish are high in mercury and other toxins.
- Farmed fish seem to be unhealthy (at least compared to wild fish), and I don't generally know what I'm eating.
- I don't want to support the frankenfish industry. :-P
Cons:
- I currently have a jar of Manischewitz Premium Gold gefilte fish in my cupboard that literally will not eat itself. (It's had plenty of opportunity, but means and/or motive must be missing.)
- Also, some packets of tuna.
- I usually eat fish several times a week, so it will be a pretty significant change.
- I live in the Pacific Northwest. Fish is big here. (Though it's not like I'd be the only vegetarian, either.)
- Fish is a good source of various healthy things.
I dunno. I think for now I'll cut back on my fish-eating, but not fully declare myself fish-free.
What are y'all's thoughts?
