So I'm sick and tired. No really, I have no cough and no sneezing - its that terrible in my head, I'm under water feeling and all I want to do is sleep- sickness. So I hibernate, this past Monday especially as I had nothing going on, well thats not true: I had it booked off you see for a Stratford call back which I never got *insert sorry for myself cry here but I'm over it - I did GET the audition and I did it as best as I could so heres to next year right?*. So I veg out and feel awful for not getting out and seeing Scott's Burlesque show (which is on tonight by the by at Clintons @ 8) preview but man oh man I just want to stay in and veg out.
April, my friend from when I was 9 - we used to ride our bikes across Alcona aka boonie-ville Ontario... wanted to get together that night as well so I text her that I'm just into vegging and she says thats cool she will call when shes off work. I know her well, so when 7 rolls around and she still hasn't called I start a movie and think shes standing me up - again.
My phone rings. Its about 9 pm.
"Hi Adri"
"Hi April..." shes canceling I know it.
"How ya feeling?"
"Pretty awful *laugh* want tea and cookies?"
"Uh no, crap, youre not going to like this idea then..."
"What now?"
"Uh, well, ever heard of the Genies?"
"Uh ya? why you wanna watch them?"
"No, do you wanna go? We have to leave in like, well, now."
stunned and even more stunned I say this: "ya sure - let me get dress"
"I can be at your place in cab in like 20 mins - think you can be ready?"
I look at the mountain of kleenex around me and say the stupidest thing: "yes. see you in 20" I tear my wardrobe apart and find an emerald silk dress with a black waist tie and purple pumps - slather on makeup to hide how pale and sick I am and pray I don't look like death warmed over....
So I go to the Genies! Only its for the parties - apparently April is dating a man named Jeffery and hes a film producer... so he gets us in as his entourage and the night is hilarious!
From the actual Genies ceremony I reunite with someone from highschool working for hot docs (I don't really remember her and neither does April but hey - its networking!) and a couple faces here and there - but mostly I'm checking out the dresses and for Kim Catrell or Sandra Oh. Then I make fun of someone in a teal dress with silver boots only to realize its Sarah Polley (and shes so tiny!)
so ya, I feel less of an ass when Jeff tells me that her nickname for the night was Judy Jetson, but I still come away admiring her guts and her movie!
Up next the after party- this is why April and I are here! Penthouse - the Sutton - open bar and a DJ to make the movie people bust a move. Is this heaven? Right away I have a drink in one hand and space on the dance floor - and oh who should be in my dancing circle? BUT SANDRA OH!! YESSSSSSSSSSSS! Paint it Black will never be the same! I wrestled with myself all night to get a picture with her but she was laughing and busting a move all the time and when people came up to her she kinda turned off you know? And I didn't want to be a fangirl when I could just enjoy dancing with her and smiling between songs. Also she *may* dance like a white girl I'm just saying! LOVE HER! In true Sex and the City style I nicknamed most everyone that night:
Crackberry Guy, Kilt Man, Bambi the Brunette, Stylz (the guy with the most style that night) and then Gordon, who didn't need a nickname and who may have given me the worlds biggest bear hug! I kept getting pushed here and there by Jeff, who to his credit was trying to help me in my career
*previous talk between him and I:
"Ok so what do you do?"
"I'm an actor"
"of course!" and hits his head like D'oh! "Well whos your agent?" he doesn't know her, tells me to get a new one and laughs
"so who did you last read for?"
"Uhhh I dunno, I had an audition for Stratford"
"STRATFORD?! No No NO hunny, ok you last read for Max Payne, a Mark Whalberg project got that? now SCHMOOZE - and BOOZE!"
so ya, introduced to many many people but half the time I didn't hear their name because the DJ had good tunes, or they were too drunk to care to be articulate, but we all danced and had a great time.
Speaking of the DJ I looked toward the 'stage' and saw a familiar face - Fox, who does light and sound and we did the whole wow youre here and it was fun to see him. Even more fun was him telling me that the DJ thought I was one of the hottest women there!!! Sweet, ego boosted ;) **remember I'm snivelling and trying not to snot on Sandra Oh... being hot was the last thing on my mind - I just wanted to be there and not look like an idiot!** Also thanks to Fox we got the great photo of April and I :)
The after after party is in a room and there are far too many people in there for that one small room. I get the nickname Red and get the Cheers "EHHHHHHH" from some of the dancers I danced with upstairs. Alas Sandra has gone home and I eat some Miss Vikies chips (no more catering at this time of night!) while talking about cigarettes and addiction to Stylz and April. She needs a smoke. I need to get home its like 3 am! Jeff insists we not leave - we bum a cig from some director guy whose fashion sense reminds me to buy a purple scarf as soon as I can - and we adventure downstairs for her to smoke and me to hail a cab. By this time its 4 am - and Jeff is pleading for us to return to the party. After some nice improv skills on my behalf (which was applauded by the bellhop with "nice work - you guys ok?") we finally get a cab and get on our way home.
OH WHAT A NIGHT!
Loved it all! and I'm already scheming to get myself in next year - only I wouldn't mind seeing the award show first :P
not a bad way to spend the day that I was supposed to be in a call back but that fate took that away from me -next year, oh next year....
