Yesterday was April 1st and in true fashion I was a fool - all day - as a clown at a Clown Workshop in Hamilton of all places!
I talked Josh into coming, which turned out to be the best idea ever. The mix of ages and levels of expertise was pretty bang on. There were two 13year olds, a couple university kids, some grads (including me) and a couple of 30 somethings. The grab bag was great for the games! We all just wanted to absorb Lisa Marie DiLiberto's info. She hails frmo the
Phillipe Gaulier school of clown - something I have never done, I have had workshops on Pochinko and "baby clown" founded on the same guy - but not Gaulier.
Her vocab was similar to mine in clown but new words like fix point and complicite (accent on that e) were totally new - but I had learned the essence of what they mean. I liked the saying "for the pleasure of it" - because if you were having a good time chances are your audience or partner was too. And thats the whole point! When its boring - its boring, killit - it should end, because theatre is not about being boring - its about being engaging to your audience and to your partner. It was great to really take in some new ideas and rehash old ones.
Over a pint some of us got to imagining the future and I'm stubborn enough to call them on this all when the timings right. I want to continue learning Gaulier (if only he was doing bouffon this summer instead of this past feburary I would be on the next plane) and I want to keep in touch with this woman- fantastic attitude and energy! I even asked if she would be willing to do the intro to clown again in TO - she already is! So if you have 40$ (yeah thats IT!) go to her next workshop in May. Shes worth it.
grinningskull this means you! lol - I totally think she will get you into Billy more. She pulled Capt Fantastico to another level of confidence and for me as well!
And also in Fool fashion Josh and I went to Lunacy Cabaret on Sat night at Zero Gravity Circus. It was stragne.... First my cousin of all people was there - who lives in Peterbourough and I never see - and then the night took 45 mins to get started from "curtain". There was so much booze no wonder things went a lil off the schedule! It was fun seeing a bouffon turn though - The Grotesques with Adam Lazarus came on and I got to see this guy in action and his students perform. I have wante to take one of his classes for so long! They were definitely gross and weird - so kudos! The rest of the night followed suit but I don't think that was their intention....
A guy named Mark - whom I gush about all the freaking time because his clown turn with the song from Les Miz KILLS ME was the encore for the night. Only thing is - his last performance at Zero Gravity ended up with him pelting the audience with bannanas so... as revenge Fezzo (one of the host clowns) duct taped bannanas under our chairs to throw at him. It was chaos!! And it was going to be SO FUNNY! I was hoping he would do his turn because I saw him in the crowd and I was excited to have Josh see this guy - a great turn and an inpiration for simplicity in clowning - but no - we al had a HUGE fruit fight. I threw my bannana aimlessly at the stage and sure enough mine hit Fezzo right in the head! Good thing the guy had a pot on his head to protect him from the blow!! Josh even saved my life with a good block on a greener (therefore more strudy) bannana (I owe you one!)
What a weird and great weekend. Not to mention going to Erindale Friday night to see the UTM Fringe Fest - I can't believe what a great weekend of theatre I had - sooooooooo good! (yes that was ten girl squad)
And now onto the week at hand: fight classes galore, a couple gigs to pay the bills, some clowning, some sushi, and some moo cards (horay they come this week!)
