Things I have learned going to California
1. A window seat is always entertaining and for some reason it feels roomier
2. Bring food onto the plane! The days are gone that one must eat crappy on board food - the way there I had sushi, on the way back vegan cookies and a turkey club!
3. Duty free is AMAZING and also run by the devil because its hard to say no but you really should keep your money for your trip or in my case RENT…
4. LA traffic is redick! We stayed in a place that was quoted as be 20 mins away from everything on the gps WRONG! LA Traffic made everything double if not triple in travel time if it was rush hour.
5. Minivans are now cool - or at least the one we rode in - with MJ blasting all the time (Thanks Ken) it was always a good ride
5.2 Ken has Kit as his GPS because he is Nightrider with the wrong car…. There were times I thought I was going to die but we always got there safely and basically on time
6. LA’s overcast days are still full sunshine - I still don’t get the weather channel there…
7. The Mummy ride at Universal was by far the best ride and Terminator was definitely the best attraction - we hit those ones twice ;)
8. The sun is a thing not to be feared but respected - I didn’t burn, I didn’t get sick (maybe a lil headache after the beach) but armed with spf 60, spray spf45, sun hat, and water bottle I can take on LA anytime! I even stopped wearing my special makeup for my neck the last two days!
9. 45 mins in the water at venice beach is enough water time. Dear god the waves are a workout.
10. Sushi in LA is AMAZING! Everything is so fresh - so clean tasting, And I found out Plum Sake is a beautiful drink hot or cold - Sushi at Naples off Colorado near the Langley Theatre was the best sushi I had… I tried three places: review of quality, price, service, presentation they win hands down. Fail: Sushi Roku. Pass because it was unbelievable but wish it wasn’t so expensive and didn’t have enough selection is the Hawaiian place across from the Langley.
11. Mexican is supposedly amazing in LA - I had it at the airport while waiting my flight and it was pretty amazing. But that said - I hope to go back and have proper Mexican and give it a review J
12. Victoria Secret sales are always worth blowing the budget…..
13. Hot tubs and LA do mix! I thought - why the hell would you want h ot tub in LA where its hot?! But the nights are just cool enough to warrant a tub. Its really nice after all the walking!
14. Fly Canadian - they have in flight personal entertainment devices that make the 5 hour flights that much easier. But only if they WORK.
15. Ralph’s grocery is pretty much a loblaws superstore - and why don’t we have all those stevia products and coconut ice cream as the american’s have?!
16. Oddly it was easy to turn off my phone and leave my palm pilot in my suitcase all week - ALL WEEK PEOPLE! That was really amazing for me - my phone/pda is attached to my body and it was great to let that go for a week ~ and fascinating…
17. Must make a million dollars for next time - my own wheels would have been awesome, not necessary just more awesome.
18. LA is not as healthy as you would think - there were IHOP’s and Big Boy’s and Jack in the Box everywhere - I was prepared for menus that had small portions or nothing on it that Kevin would eat. What gives? I had to search for edibles! And of all places - Dallas airport had vegan cookies and fresh fruit to chose from! WTF?!
19. If you are that close to Comic con - GO TO COMIC CON or you will regret it.
20. Action On Film Festival sounds like its al fighting doesn’t it? Well its not! There was comedy and documentaries - who knew!?
Next time:
Own car - maybe for even a day?
More time at the beach to see sunset
More hats
Six Flags baby
WB studio tour
Time for the City Walk at universal studios!
What’s great is I found out that Kevin and I are great at traveling with each other - which is a huge relief because I LOVE to travel! We started getting snippy at the end but I think that’s because I was sad and stressed about going home without him to a full weekend of work and acting - alone on the plane with the switch in Dallas (that had lovely sky trains to get me from terminal A to terminal D) - and well, we hadn’t had any alone time in a week…
I also love site seeing and travel with Christine and Justin! Our fantastic hosts for the way down! It was hilarious to scope the tourist scene with them and also find fun places to eat along the way ~ I am in love with Sushi of Naples and that Zen Zoo we happened upon in Hollywood.
What’s weird is that everyone here - even the hobos - where so NICE! Someone started shouting at us from a passing car - they slowed down and we thought we were going to be heckled or asked for directions but it was someone slowing down to tell us that Ken had dropped his phone a couple feet back. Seriously?! And everyone was so hospitable, and I mean everyone! So much for the American stereotype.
I can’t wait to come again - but more importantly it makes me want to go to other places! I haven’t been to New York since I was in high school on an art trip so I would love to se it with adult eyes… I want to see the cherry blossom picnic in Japan - I want to see all the Cirque shows I can in Vegas - I want to go to Ireland (as this man beside me remarks “are you English?” because I ordered tea from the in flight snacks bar - “No. But a bit Irish” I remark with a slight accent ;) I want to see something at the Globe Theatre before I die! I want to drink until I fall over in Newfieland! Hell I want to go everywhere and this trip was so wonderful!
Thanks to everyone who helped me make it happen and who adventured with me (or put up with me!) It was a great vacay that was of course too short in the long run :P
