The trouble with justice

I recieved an email from my sister today and now have reasoning behind the anxiety attacks.
For all of you who have not yet had the privilege of hearing the story, I will now inform you as short and detailed as I can make it:
My sister had two roommates in college, Kate and Nikki. After a couple of years of living with these two, Nikki had plans of moving away. She purchased new furnature and sold Amanda her old bed (not enough Lysol in the world). On our 21st birthday (we're twins, you see), Amanda recieved a phone call from Nikki. Nikki wants help moving her new furnature and requests Amanda's assistance. Amanda refuses and we go on with our celebrations.
About a month or two go by and Nikki still resides in the old house. She is away for the weekend, so Amanda takes the liberty of getting the mail (something Nikki usually doesn't allow). She sees something from a credit card company and assumes its just an application. With all intention of taking it to work for shredding, Amanda opens this mail. Its a bill for over $600. She calls the credit card company and inquires about this bill, thinking it must be some sort of mistake. She's transferred to a fraud inspector and the discussion ensues. Amanda finds out that the charges were made at a local furnature store on our 21st birthday. She immediately knows who has done this and files a report.
During this time Kate also realizes her checking account is over $100 short and she is missing a whole book of checks. She was able to get the cashed check back, made out to Nikki. Nikki had forged Kate's signature on the check, IN PRINT, NAME SPELLED INCORRECTLY.
So, there it was.. all the evidence in plain view. Which about brings us up to now.
Nikki was given until September 16th to plea guilty and take a one year sentence. If she did not plea guilty it was to go to court the 29th, which we all were rooting for. We assumed she would be found guilty anyway and given a larger term for wasting the judge's time. No such luck. The prosecution failed to get a hold of Amanda, claiming they lost her address and phone number. Without the star witness for some reason they couldn't go through with trial. They gave Nikki the opportunity to plea down to a misdemeanor charge and take only one year PROBATION! She is guilty of a felony and walks free. That probation really must be teaching her a lesson. The police get lazy, the law unorganized. We all get screwed again.
