This volume presents 32 articles on Yiddish literature, language and culture. The essays, written in English, German and Yiddish, illustrate the thematic and methodological breadth of contemporary research.
The volume opens with exemplary readings in modern Yiddish literature. The first section comprises research on modernist Yiddish poets as well as the hallowed founders of the era of the “classics of Yiddish literature,” book illustrators and popular literature. The second section comprises essays on Older Yiddish literature and language and the third is dedicated to questions of diachronic and synchronic linguistics, while considering the cultural aspects of language use. Political and cultural engagement in Yiddish are central to the final section of the volume.
