Summary: Jack takes Ianto out for dinner
It had been just three days since Jack had arrived back and so far he had spent most of his time in the office catching up on what he had missed, which was apparently a lot. Luckily though, there didn’t seem to be much rift activity since John had left and so it meant that he could spend time with his team and work on re-building his relationships with them.
“Ianto, can I have a minute?” he asked as he spotted Ianto over in his new kitchen area, doing what looked like the dishes. He had to admit, he liked this new set up they had come up with. It had been well over twenty years since he had changed things about, and it was refreshing to move things around now and then. Although he wasn’t too sure about the new positioning of his desk, meant he couldn’t watch them all whilst he was in here.
“Yes Jack?” Ianto asked as he popped his head round the door.
Jack smiled softly at him, “I’ve uh, I’ve booked a table for seven thirty,” he said slightly nervously, “If you’re still interested that is,”
Ianto smiled back, “Seven thirty sounds fine,”
Jack grinned, “You do like Italian though right,”
“Love it,” Ianto told him.
“Okay well,” Jack looked at his watch, it was coming up for six, “Why don’t you head off home and get ready, I’ll pick you up at seven,”
“I’ll see you later then,” Ianto said with a slight nod and headed out of the office.
He quickly went over to the kitchen and drained the sink before heading out of the hub. Jack had turned in his seat and watched him as he left. He smiled to himself as he realised that it had been about forty odd years since he’d been on a date. Made him kind of nervous.
He decided that maybe he too should go get ready. He still had to figure out what he was going to wear. Ianto was likely to make an effort and if he wore his usual garb he knew it would look like he couldn’t be bothered.
When he was down in his room he opened his large wardrobe and started hunting for something suitable. He had a nice black and white striped shirt and some nice black trousers he could wear with them. Or should he wear dressy jeans? No, black trousers it was. And so pulling out his chosen clothes he quickly gave them an iron and polished his black shoes before jumping in the shower.
Jack had never been one for quick showers. He loved the feeling of the hot water beating down against his back and would often stay in there until he went all wrinkly or the water went cold (whichever happened first), however, after taking his time over his outfit, he only had a half hour to get ready and so this was possibly the quickest shower he had had in his life. He had shaved that morning and so decided he didn’t really need to again, and anyway, he had it on good authority that Ianto liked him with a bit of stubble.
“Jack? What the hell are you doing?” Owen called down the hatch, “Need your hand with something,”
“Give me a minute,” Jack shouted up as he finished doing his hair, pulled his suit jacket on and put his gun in one of the inside pockets and his wallet and phone in the other. He grabbed the keys to the SUV. But as he went to put them in his pocket, he realised he couldn’t very well take the SUV out with him on a date as the team might need it.
When Jack climbed back up into his office, he really wished he had a camera on him. The looks on Tosh, Owen and Gwen’s faces were absolutely brilliant.
“What’s the problem?” He asked as he walked over to where they were all gathered round Owen’s desk.
“You going out?” Gwen asked as she looked him up and down.
“Yeah, got a date,” he said before turning to Owen, “I need to borrow your car,”
Owen frowned at him, “You’re not taking my car,”
Jack sighed, “Look I can’t take the SUV and I don’t have any other car, so please, can I borrow yours?” he said as he held out the keys to the SUV.
Owen sighed and pulled out his own car keys, “Fine, but if I find any suspicious looking stains in the backseat…”
“Yeah, yeah I know,” Jack said as he rolled his eyes, “So what’s the emergency?”
“Oh, well we were just wondering if you had seen anything like this before?” Tosh asked as she pointed to the screen.
Jack looked at the image of the mauled body on the screen. It had been completely cut open and all organs had been removed. At the moment the local homicide team were investigating it, but it was possible that it was an alien that did it.
“I have seen stuff like this before, plenty of times,” Jack told them as he squinted at the screen, “Try cross-referencing it with Voro. There might be something there… oh wait, was last night a full moon?”
“Uh,” Tosh said as she tapped her palm pilot frantically, “Yes it was,”
“Look at werewolves too,” he said before standing up, “But it’s unlikely, they cause a lot more mess,”
“You’re just going to go out on your date then and leave us to do all this by ourselves?” Gwen asked, not happy at all.
“Yes,” Jack said, “I’ve been waiting for over a year for this Gwen, and your all big enough and pretty enough to deal with this on your own,” he added as he began heading for the door, “Only call me if it is absolutely necessary and don’t wait up,”
Owen, Gwen and Tosh all just looked at each other, “Who the hell is he going on a date with?” Owen asked.
“Well whoever it is, it must be special,” Tosh said, “I’ve never seen Jack look so hot before,”
The other two reluctantly agreed before they turned and went back to work.
When Jack got to Ianto’s house, he tooted the horn and sat back to wait on his date. Hee hee, his ‘date’. That sounded so weird, but fabulous. Maybe if he played his cards right it could become ‘boyfriend’.
“You’re late,” Ianto said with a smile as he climbed into the car.
“I know, the others asked me…” Jack stopped as he took in Ianto’s appearance. He was dressed in black trousers and jacket like Jack, but he was wearing a shiny green shirt that when he moved had tints of purple in it. He was absolutely edible.
“Yes?” Ianto asked with a smile.
“You look great,” Jack said with a grin.
“You don’t look too bad yourself,” Ianto said with a smile as he lent forward and placed a small kiss on Jack’s lips, “Shall we? I don’t want us to be late for dinner too,”
Jack was quite clearly lost for words as he nodded dumbly and turned in his seat before driving away.
“So, do they all know you’re out on a date then?” Ianto asked, “Is that why Owen lent you his car?”
Jack smiled at that (now that he wasn’t staring at Ianto, it was slightly easier to concentrate), “They know I’m on a date, but don’t know who with. Although I don’t think it’ll take them long to figure it out,”
Ianto snorted slightly at that, “Well here’s hoping they don’t call me and ask me to come in,”
“Give me your phone,” Jack said as he held out a hand.
Ianto handed it over and watched as Jack turned it off and handed it back, “You do know they will go mental at me if they do try to phone and can’t get hold of me,”
Jack turned to him slightly, “Don’t worry. I’ve still got mine on,” he said with a wink.
Ianto just shook his head in amusement as he tucked his phone away. It didn’t take them long to get to the restaurant. In fact it took longer to find somewhere to park the car. They couldn’t just park it anywhere like they would the SUV or else Owen would get a fine.
“Booking for Jones,” Jack said as he and Ianto entered the restaurant. He had decided to use Ianto’s name as Harkness was pretty much infamous in Cardiff now after that missing poster that Gwen had gotten the police to circulate. And he didn’t need the police force knowing all his business.
The Maitre D’ nodded and called a waitress over who showed them to a small table in a nice secluded corner. After handing them a menu each the waitress asked if they would like anything to drink.
“A bottle of your best Barolo,” Jack said.
Ianto raised an eyebrow at that before nodding to the waitress that that would be fine. Once she was gone however he voiced his objections to Jack.
“You’re driving,” he said, “And I’m not drinking all that myself. I’ll end up on the floor,”
Jack smiled, “Don’t worry about it. I picked up a little something on my travels that will stop us from getting drunk no matter how much we drink. Also have a glass of water in between each glass of wine,”
“Are you talking about alien drugs?” Ianto hissed. He couldn’t say he approved.
Jack shook his head, “No. They’re from the future. Just haven’t been invented yet,” he said as he handed Ianto what looked like a humbug. Truth was, it was Martha who had given him them. She had received them as a gift off of some scientist in the 42nd century and refused to try them as she viewed them as an illegal drug. But Jack was very familiar with them as they were extremely popular (and legal) in the 51st century, “They’re perfectly safe,” he added as he noticed Ianto frowning at it.
Ianto sighed and popped the thing into his mouth. He had expected to have to suck on it as was usual with boiled sweets, but this thing dissolved in his mouth straight away, entering his blood stream with tremendous speed.
“Okay, but still. Barolo? Do you have any idea how expensive that’s going to be?” Ianto pointed out.
Jack took hold of Ianto’s hand, “Ianto, I don’t care. You’re worth it,”
Ianto blushed at that, but didn’t take his hand back. It was nice feeling that someone actually liked him and wanted him.
“Okay, so what are you having?” Jack asked as he looked down at his menu, not letting go of Ianto’s hand.
“Um, I dunno,” Ianto said as he skimmed the menu. God everything was extortionate. How the hell could Jack afford all this?
When the waitress came back with their wine and a nice big jug of water, she took their orders. They decided to share some bruschetta to start and then Jack had ordered a fettuccine dish and Ianto had decided that as flattered as he was, he couldn’t order anything too expensive and so ordered some ravioli.
“So,” Jack said as they ate their bruschetta, “When I left, Owen was second in command. How is it that Gwen ended up running the show?”
Ianto smiled, “Well, the first time we went out without you, we were still trying to accept the fact that you had left on your own and so all of our heads were all over the place. All of us except Gwen. She managed to keep her cool and get the job done. None of us were really surprised though, she was always good at organisation,”
“Yes she was,” Jack agreed.
“Anyway,” Ianto continued, “When we got back to the hub, Owen announced that he didn’t want to be in charge, that he didn’t want to even be second in command. That he didn’t want the responsibility and that he was quite happy just being our medic. And so it was decided that Gwen would take command and Owen would act as second in command until you came back.”
“Owen really said that?” Jack asked in surprise.
Ianto nodded, “He’s not the Owen you remember Jack. He’s grown up a lot. He’s even stopped shagging around,”
“And you know that how?” Jack asked with a raised eyebrow.
Ianto rolled his eyes, “Because he told me,” he said.
Jack smiled, “So what else did I miss? Gwen’s getting married, Owen’s stopped shagging around… anything going on with Tosh? Or you for that matter?”
“Tosh is still single, although she moved into a bigger flat. As for me, well… I got a cat,”
“You got a cat?” Jack asked in surprise.
Ianto nodded, “She’s called Jaffa,” he said with a smile, “You do like cats don’t you?”
Jack made a face, “I don’t really know. I mean, where I come from they’re kind of vermin so it’s a bit weird for me when people say they have one as pets,” he explained, “But I don’t dislike them,” he added as he noticed the look of disappointment on Ianto’s face.
“Well she’s still quite young. Only five months but she’s absolutely lovable and can already take care of herself. But I promise you, you’ll end up loving cats when she’s done with you,”
Jack grinned, “Well if she’s nearly half as lovable as you,” he added as he rubbed his foot up the inside of Ianto’s leg.
Ianto slapped him on the hand, “Behave,” he told him before he took a sip of his wine.
As they left the restaurant hand in hand an hour later, Ianto couldn’t help but think just how nice their meal had had been and how wonderful it felt being out on a date with Jack.
“So you wanna go see a movie then?” Jack asked him, “The night is still young after all,”
“Are you paying?” Ianto joked.
“Of course,” Jack smiled.
“Lead the way then,” Ianto said with a grin.
Jack smiled back and started pulling them in the direction of the cinema. When they got there they had a look at what was on. They decided not to go watch Alien Vs Predator as they got enough of that at work, and they didn’t really want to go see something that required a lot of thinking so after much debate they decided on ‘Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead’ which was supposed to be quite good.
“Aren’t you getting anything?” Jack asked as he walked over to Ianto with the world’s biggest bag of popcorn.
“I’m really far too full,” Ianto said, “Although I did get us a drink,” he added as he held up the large cup of coke.
“Great,” Jack grinned, “Sugar rush,”
Ianto rolled his eyes before leading Jack into the theatre. Jack had of course made a beeline for the back row, but with a look from Ianto he about turned and sat down with him in one of the middle rows.
As it was a Tuesday, it was quite quiet which was probably a good thing as halfway through the film, Jack’s phone started vibrating.
“I’ll be back in a second,” he whispered to Ianto as he jogged along the empty row and out of the theatre. Ianto sighed. He knew it had been too good to be true and that it wouldn’t be a normal night if they weren’t called into work. Although, at least dinner hadn’t been interrupted.
Jack came back in, bounding up the stairs three at a time, “We gotta go,” he whispered to Ianto as he grabbed his jacket and lead the way back down the stairs.
“Sorry about this,” Jack said as they got into the car, “I’ll make it up to you. I promise,”
“Jack it’s okay,” Ianto said as he put his hand on Jack’s arm, “Dinner was fantastic and even if it was only a couple of hours, it was nice to spend some time alone with you, outside of the hub and just be normal for a change,”
Jack smiled, “It was nice,” he agreed, “I enjoyed myself too. We should do it again some time,”
Ianto leaned forward and captured Jack’s lips in a passionate kiss, “I’d like that,” he said with a smile, “Now, I think we better get back to the hub before they start calling again,”
Jack nodded and started up the car. When he walked into the hub it was to find the other three loading up weapons.
“This better be good,” Jack said as he headed over to them. They all froze as they noticed Ianto walking close behind him.
“You were on a date with Ianto?” Gwen asked in surprise.
Jack just looked at her like she was an idiot, “I was, and like I said, this better be good,”
Ianto tried his best not to blush, but it was pretty hard when they other three were staring at him like that, “What?” he snapped.
“I thought you said you wouldn’t go there again?” Owen asked, “Ever,”
Jack spun to stare at him in surprise and Ianto sighed, “I said I wouldn’t go back to shagging him,” he corrected, “This is different though. We’ve never been on a date before,” he said as he took Jack’s hand making Jack smile softly at him in agreement.
“Well was it nice?” Tosh asked, trying her hardest not to grin manically at the two as they were being so cute, “Did you have fun?”
Ianto smiled as he nodded at her, “Yes, thank you. Now, why are we loading up?”
