Radiohead are set to rock the music industry yet again after releasing their new album "The King Of Limbs" in the 24-bit FLAC format on 7digital today.
Although the album was released in hi-res formats through their site TheKingOfLimbs.com after their original announcement, this is supposedly the first time an independent digital music has made a move to sell tracks in an HD format.
7digital want to pioneer the move to 24-bit audio ahead of competitors like iTunes, who were rumoured to be considering HD audio after comments from Interscope head Jimmy Iovine suggested there were talks to improve the quality of music available to listeners.
It is not the first time buyers have been able to get 24-bit from smaller retails though. Many niche stores have offered high-res files to their customers, and the Rolling Stones recently released five of their remastered albums in 24-bit, but not through a mainstream digital store.
Some readers might be excited by the prospect of better quality audio being made available, but it doesn’t come without problems. First, the price for hi-res files is likely to be higher, and second, the storage space used shoots up dramatically. A large library of 24-bit audio is going to fill your drive pretty quickly. And that’s before you get into the debate on whether 24-bit audio stores are overkill, or overdue.
Is 24-bit the next big thing, or is it just another way to suck more money from music lovers?
