В начале книги, автор провозглашает достаточно экстремистскую позицию. Т.е. он говорит, что "проблема сознания есть не что иное, как проблема жизни":
My argument is simple: You can't have it both ways. You can't both acknowledge the existence of the organism and at the same time view it as just a locus of processes or physicochemical mechanisms. And once you see the organism as a unity, as more than just a process, you are, in effect, recognizing its primitive agency, its possession of interests, needs, and point ofview. That is, you are recognizing its at least incipient mindfulness.
The problem of consciousness, then, is none other than the problem of life. What we need to understand is how life emerges in the natural world.
А вот и интересная мысль:
What makes vision visual is that it is an activity of exploring the environment making use of an understanding of the specific family of ways in which movement produces sensory change, namely, those ways that depend, centrally, on the eye. Blinking, turning the eye or head, and moving in relation to objects bring about characteristically eye-based sensory events. What is remarkable is that the world can show up for visual consciousness--objects can show up with all manner of spatial and visible properties--thanks to our fluent appreciation of the ways that eye-related visual sensory stimulation depends on our own movements.
Т.е. визуальное восприятие является активностью специфического характера. Моргание, поворот глаз или головы, движение по отношению к объекту -- всё это вызывает характерные "события восприятия". Именно специальный характер этих способов исследования окружающего мира придаёт этому восприятию модальность, т.е. делает его визуальным.
Ну, что же, буду читать дальше. Если найду что-нибудь интересное, расскажу :)
В заключении одно общее замечание (оно именно общее, а не связанное именно с тем, о чём идёт речь выше). Листая литературу по "сознанию" встречаешься с удивительными примерами того, как люди могут не понимать друг друга и как некритически относиться к так называемым "экспериментальным свидетельствам".
