А вот, что пишет Susanna Hoffman в книге "The Olive and the Caper" :"Black and sugary, tiny dried currants are not the same as the black, red, and white fresh currants of the Saxifraga bush of northern Europe, used to make cassis liqueur, jellies, tarts, and game sauces. Rather they are a special variety of miniature grape first grown in the Peloponnesos. Indeed, the word “currant” comes from the ancient Peloponnesian city and area of Corinth. When the Venetians conquered the coast and islands of western Greece, they were charmed by the tiny dried Corinthian grapes. They imported scads of them to sprinkle in many of their fancy dishes, especially the ones using their new food, sugar. The two together made seductively sweet treats.
When the Ottomans started to encroach across the Greek mainland, the Venetians, zealous to guard their dulcet tidbit, transplanted the currant vines to their Ionian islands, especially to Zante, now called Zakinthos. From there the dried grapes took the name “Zante currants.” The export of the miniature dried grapes became so profitable that it helped line the coffers of Venice and the dried currant went on to become one of Greece’s main trade goods. Most of the world’s dried currant supply is still grown in its original homeland."
