These ‘sonatas for fortepiano with violin accompaniment’ are veritable gems which offer conclusive proof of the maturity and exceptional melodic invention of a composer who was not yet twenty years old. Dedicated to his older brother Ferdinand, the sonatas were intended for the two brothers’ ‘domestic’ musical activities.

‘In the performance practice of this music, in addition to the appropriate instrumentarium, it is above all setting the appropriate tone that deserves particular attention. It is obvious that Schubert’s melodic lines, even in his instrumental works, are predominantly inspired by song. In any convincing interpretation, this must have its effect on the phrasing, dictated by breathing, but also on the use of vibrato. Whereas modern violin technique regards vibrato as a permanent and indispensable element in the fashioning of tone, in the nineteenth century it represented a consciously employed ornament which could underline melodic events and mark musical highpoints. When these prescriptions are followed and combined with a bowing technique that yields up clear articulation and, along with this, intelligible declamation of the musical ideas, Schubert’s instrumental works take on that speaking character which directly affects the listener.’ Rudolf Hopner
Midori Seiler has chosen an original violin by Franz Geissenhof (Vienna, 1814), while Jos van Immerseel plays a copy of an 1814 Viennese fortepiano by Johann Peter Fritz.
