Watched Alice in Wonderland last night. Hm, I'd give it a B+. Wonderful visual spectacle (the world-building is AMAZING), but the storyline leaves something to be desired, especially at the overly simplistic, pat ending. I got the feeling that perhaps Burton had run out of time. Also, I don't think this was Depp's best performance, either. Cindy and I were talking about how his performance seemed an amalgamation of all the other charas he's ever played. As the Mad Hatter, he swings between Edward Scissorhands (sanity) and Jack Sparrow (insanity). And he definitely had a creeper factor going that sort of weirded me out, not helped by the strange subtext going on between him and Alice. :/

I LOVED certain characters though, especially the White Queen (<3<3 her little neurotic touches and affectations), the Cheshire Cat, and the Red Queen.

Main thing that snagged on my attention (and it's such a small thing) was that at the *happy* end, Alice sets in motion a chain of events that anyone who's paid attention to World History in high school would know WILL END IN THE OPIUM WARS. Like...really, Burton? Happy, happy, joy, joy -- for the British Empire, at least. Hrm.

I wouldn't recommend seeing it in 3-D, though. It didn't really add anything to the experience at all, unlike Avatar. Save your $$.
