How Many Tunes Can You Sing "O Little Town of Bethlehem" To?

Dec 24, 2010 10:31

So far, in addition to the canonical tune: "Gilligan's Island" theme, "House of the Rising Sun," "America the Beautiful," "Yellow Rose of Texas," "Amazing Grace," "Puff the Magic Dragon," "Auld Lang Syne," and "Stairway to Heaven."

Feel free to add more if you've got 'em.

There's something called "Ballad Meter" that a lot of songs share.  The words of any song in ballad meter can be sung to the tune of any other song in ballad meter.  And any poem written in ballad meter (practically all of Emily Dickinson's poems are written in ballad meter, e.g. "Because I could not stop for Death") can be sung to the tune of any song written in ballad meter.

Finally, for an extra-special bonus, any text in ballad meter can be sung to "Stairway to Heaven" by drawing out the syllables a bit.  (But "Stairway" can't be sung to tunes in ballad meter.  It's strictly a one-way mapping.)

In other news, Ilya's doing great, and looking forward to Christmas tomorrow, when Santa's going to bring him a pile of loot.
