Remus Lupin lived a drab kind of life, all dull shades of grey and brown. It was not something he chose. His grey and brown wardrobe just kind of happened, colours being a lot harder to maintain, when that extended to the rest of his life he couldn’t really pinpoint, or maybe he didn’t want to. That would mean acknowledging just how alone he was or had been. The last couple of years had flashes of colour, Harry’s bright green eyes (so like Lily’s), Sirius’ jet black hair and the comforting colours of Hogwarts. But until recently, Remus’ world still remained grey.

From the moment she arrived at Grimmauld Place tripping over that old troll’s foot, Tonks had brought such colour to his grey old life. Gaining her friendship meant so much and whilst the deepest wishes of his heart may be for more, there was no way such a vibrant young girl would ever look at an old man such as himself.

“You’re not such an old man” a voice in his head which sounded suspiciously like Sirius told him, “mid-thirties is not old”.

“ Too old for her anyway”, he replied and then rolled his eyes at his internal debate.

Just her mere presence had brought so much colour to his life, literally and metaphorically. Spending time with her made his soul happy and gave him something to hope for, getting a smile or a cheeky comment put a smile on his face during even his darkest days. And that’s without the actual colour she brought in her own person.

Remus awoke late in the afternoon on the day after the Full Moon, whilst still feeling the after effects, he dragged himself out of bed in order to attend the Order meeting that evening. He probably should have stayed in bed but things were moving so fast these days he didn’t want to miss anything. And there was also the likelihood that she would be there. He couldn’t resist the lure of seeing her, of drawing some warmth from her presence.

Pulling himself together, he washed changed and flooed to the Leaky Cauldron, not feeling up to apparating and anyway he enjoyed the short walk in the fresh (for London) air. Letting himself into Grimmauld Place with the key Sirius gave him, he found hive of activity. Hermione had arrived to stay with the Weasleys and a number of Order members were there early in hopes of partaking in Molly’s dinner. Remus soon found himself being fussed over by Molly, clucking that he was “far too thin” and that he “should have stayed in bed”.

Alongside Molly’s fussing he had Sirius talking at him, spouting a stream of complaints relating to his incarceration in his family home. He was sounding more and more like a stroppy teenager the longer he remained in the house. Remus made a mental note to speak to Dumbledore about giving Sirius something, anything, to do to keep him occupied before he did something stupid.

Across the table he was aware of Tonks amusing Ginny and Hermione by morphing her hair a variety of colours ending in a rainbow mix. Remus found himself mesmerised by the changes in shades as she spun around to show off the effect.

“Someone’s got it bad”, Sirius muttered into his ear with a tone of amusement.

“What?” Remus turned to face his friend, aware of the slight blush arising on his face.

“Moony with a crush! Now that’s entertainment!”

“I…I… do not..have...a crush!” He stumbled over his words as he tried to dismiss Sirius’ accusation, the blush deepening. “I just...find her magic fascinating...in an intellectual way. And ssh someone will hear you!”

“Suuure, intellectually. That’s a new one.” Mimicking Remus’ voice, he said, “in an intellectual way” and his subsequent cackle drew attention from across the table.

“What’s so funny?” asked Tonks leaning across the table with a raised eyebrow and a cheeky grin, her multicolored hair strands framing her face.

“Oh Remus was just telling me how he finds your magic fascinating. Purely intellectually of course”, replied Sirius with a roll of his eyes.

“Okaaay,” answered Tonks warily as she pointed at them both, “this better not be some joke at my expense, else I’ll hex you both!”

“I’ll bare that in mind,” replied Remus with a nod and a smile.

“Oh she’s a feisty one!”Sirius leant into Remus and for once spoke quietly, “She’ll keep you on your toes.”

“Sirius, stop it!” Remus cautioned, although he was unable to stop his heart leaping at the idea. It sounded like just the thing to put some real colour into his life.
