Summary: An explanation for why Tonks' hair was blonde at Bill and Fleur's wedding.
Author's Note: This isn't how I think the announcement really happened, but it was a plot bunny that wouldn't let go. I hope Fleur's accent is all right. Concrit is greatly appreciated, as always. Enjoy!

"Tonks, Tonks, weel you ‘elp me?"

Tonks smiled brightly for Fleur’s benefit, but she sighed inwardly. There were other places she would much rather be. And she thought that the train on Fleur’s wedding robes was just asking to be twisted, but she dutifully moved to straighten it.

"Merci. Eet eez beautiful, no?" Tonks didn’t know whether she was referring to her ivory ensemble or the bouquet of peach roses that she was holding beatifically in front of her.

"Yes, yes it is."

"Eet eez a shame, don’t you theenk?" Fleur considered her searchingly for a moment. Whatever was a shame apparently troubled her and elicited some sort of compassion about the misfortune.

"What?"

"That you deed not ‘ave all this." She looked at the pink-haired witch with a supremely pitying expression.

"Oh." I get quite enough of that from Remus, thank you very much. Instead of saying those words that surely would have damaged Fleur’s palpable euphoria, she smiled gamely. "It’s all right. I quite enjoyed the small ceremony we had." Fleur looked dubious, but started chattering excitedly about place settings.

"Excuse me, Fleur, do you mind if I steal Tonks for a minute? There’s a slight problem with the drinks." Tonks didn’t think she had had ever been so happy to see someone in her life.

"I suppose."

As he took her hand and led her to the back of the Burrow, she said breathily, "My hero." She put her hand to her forehead and fluttered her eyelashes for full effect. His eyes glinted down at her with barely disguised amusement.

"So what’s the prob- Remus!" She let out a half-laugh half-sigh as he wrapped his arms around her from behind and began placing a trail of wet kisses up the curve of her neck.

"I lied." He started working on the other side of her neck and along her jaw. "I have to say that Bill and Fleur chose a most inconvenient time to get married, interrupting our honeymoon." He placed a final kiss on her temple as he turned her to lean back in his arms.

"But we didn’t go on a honeymoon." She had meant to tease, but his features clouded slightly. "Not that I haven’t enjoyed the honeymoon activities," she recovered quickly.

His grin was distinctly mischievous. "And would you like to continue those activities?"

"Right here, right now?" She arched an eyebrow at him because she thought that possible discovery by Molly Weasley was surely the most effective mood killer ever.

"Well, perhaps I could wait a few hours." The intense and heady kiss that he gave her put the lie to his words. When they finally broke apart, he looked at her in question and twirled a strand of hair around his finger. "Why did you morph your hair blonde?"

"Bugger." She reached up and felt the bouncy curls. "The Healers said they thought this might start to happen."

"What’s wrong?"

She blushed. "Well, I…I mean, nothing’s wrong." He didn’t appear convinced, and his concerned, almost fearful, expression tore at her. "Do you remember last week when I got into a minor scrape on patrol and had to go to St. Mungo’s?" He nodded guardedly. "Well,…they ran some diagnostic spells."

She paused and pulled him over to sit on a low stone wall. "This isn’t exactly how I wanted to tell you, but…I’m pregnant."

"You’re-?" He gaped like a confused troll.

She nodded. "We’re going to have a baby." She couldn’t restrain the grin that broke across her face any longer. She knew the timing wasn’t ideal and she had never really wanted or expected to be a mother before, but the situation felt undeniably right to her. His reaction to the news was not quite what she had hoped for, but she had had days to get used to the idea. She clearly remembered her shock and a similar dazed expression to the one he was wearing when the Healer congratulated her.

Finally, he smiled. She couldn’t help but feel that it didn’t reach all the way to his eyes. But she determinedly pushed the thought aside. "That’s…that’s amazing, Dora." Then, he kissed her again. She felt his love and his wonder and even his fear. She knew that nothing about this would be easy. That they couldn’t automatically live happily ever after in their own little bubble.

But she had to believe that their child, the promise of a future, would give them hope and strength to fight in the darkening days to come.

They simply gazed at each other for a few moments, absorbing their new reality, before Remus lightly ran his fingers over her face and almost tentatively caressed her stomach. Then, he pulled her up from the wall and held her close, lingeringly touching his lips to hers. "We should probably join the others."

"Probably." As they walked hand in hand toward the wedding tent, she suppressed the frightening suspicion that, even in the few moments since their last kiss, Remus had somehow closed himself off from her.

However, after they greeted Harry and found seats, he put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her to him. As he smiled down at her, he seemed to have reached a decision. And when Fleur walked down the aisle with her gleaming hair and her pretty peach roses, Tonks believed that everything would be all right.
