Author's Note: This is dedicated to kileaiya, one of our not forgotten members for whom this challenge is in honor. She played James in the Marauders era rpg hp_sun_n_shadow and it was indeed a great honor to have known her, though I would have liked to have done so better.

A Question For My Father

I often wonder if mortality was ever
more to you than a distant spectre
a shadowy speck of an exit sign
at the end of an infinite corridor

As a child? when a villain's malice
reached out to draw it nearer?
No, little boys do not embrace death
though they live through pain and terror

In the first war when James died
the heart was torn out of the Maurauders
but I think the illusion of invincibility
is not so easily torn asunder

Draining, dragging years later
mortality might have drawn closer
if my mother hadn't loved it away
with her youth, her laugh, her colour

That last day, when you kissed me goodbye
did you feel Death over your shoulder?
Or were you sure in your heart
it was not goodbye forever?
