My Hero
A Remus/Tonks fic
by Marciana (

There goes my hero
Watch him as he goes...
There goes my hero
He's ordinary...
The wailing coming from inside the house meant that she was awake, even at this ungodly hour, but Remus couldn't help but smile even as he Reillusioned himself. He still wasn't used to it, and he wasn't quite sure when he would get used to it, the sound of a baby crying in the middle of the night, waking up everyone (and possibly everything as well) inside the house. He supposed he would, in due time.
He let himself into the house, double-checking the surroundings before finally closing it and locking it for the night. He tried to move silently but a man his size had never really stood a chance against creaking floor wood planks.
"Who's there?" came a stern female voice from the kitchen, and Remus stopped in his tracks and put his hands up in a gesture of surrender, "Identify yourself."
"It is I," Remus answered, "Remus John Lupin, werewolf, married to your daughter Nymphadora, and--"
"And father of my grandson, Theodore Remus Lupin, yes, yes," Andromeda finished for him exasperatedly, "I could tell it was you by your long-winded introduction alone."
"I thought it only convenient to spare you from asking me a second time and myself answering a second, third or fourth time," Remus replied with a shrug as Andromeda emerged from the kitchen with milk.
"Well, aren't you just dandy," Andromeda answered rather coolly, shoving the bottle at Remus, "Now take this up to your wife, kind gentleman, and make yourself useful."
"Shove it, mother," said a very refreshing voice from the stairs, "I will not have you speaking to my husband that way."
"I'll speak to him however I want to," Andromeda argued, her glare forcibly reminding Remus of her Death Eater sister, "He's under my roof!"
"So am I!" answered Dora hotly as she finished her trip to the living room, a sniffling blue-haired baby in her arms, "And as long as that is the case, I will have you remember that he is part of the family now, and you'd do well to treat him like the son that he is now to you!"
Andromeda opened her mouth to retort, but Dora beat her to it.
"Oh, come on, mum!" she whined, "I'm so SICK of this! It's not like he sheds on the furniture or something!"
Remus had almost chuckled, but he quickly lost the urge to laugh when Dora raised her next argument.
"Dad learned to accept us," she said softly, "Why can't you?"
Andromeda pointed a finger at her daughter, her stance rigid, her eyes teary. "Do NOT," she ordered hoarsely, "Talk to me about your fool of a father!"
"If you still refuse to accept Remus and I are happy and married," Dora shot back, "Then you're a far worse fool than you say he was! So foolish, you wouldn't even deserve him, he'd have been too good for you." And with that, she stormed back upstairs.
Left alone, Remus's eyes met his mother-in-law's. Andromeda heaved a great sigh and disappeared into the kitchen, muttering about disrespect and foolishness. Remus turned and followed Dora upstairs.
He found her in her bedroom -the bedroom they now shared- pacing in front of the crib from where Teddy looked up at her almost uncertainly with his great green eyes. She looked up and stopped only when Remus closed the door behind him. She sighed, putting one hand on her hip.
"I shouldn't have shouted at my mum like that," she said quietly, unable to look Remus in the eye.
"You didn't have to defend me," Remus replied, removing his coat and approaching her.
"I know I didn't," Dora replied.
"Thank you, all the same," he told her, taking her into his arms.
"She's taking dad's death a lot harder than I thought," Dora answered, "She calls him a fool and a coward for going on the run in the first place, but she hasnt stopped crying about him. It's been at least a fortnight...I think it's all sort of started to crash down pretty hard around her. My shouting at her didn't help things...Gods, I'm horrible."
Remus shushed her soothingly. "Don't say that," he said, "She's just...very emotional at the moment. We all are."
"I know, I just..." Dora replied ruefully, "I can't stand that she's still got it in her to treat you like dirt and talk to you worse."
"You don't have to explain to me," Remus told her, "I understand. And I'm sure Andromeda does too." He kissed her forehead as she buried her face in his chest. "It's all right now..." he said quietly, "Everything's okay..."
From his crib, Teddy made a cheerful-sounding gurgle, as if to say that he was in the room too. Dora relinquished her hold on her husband and, smiling, picked her boy back up.
"Sorry, luv," she said, "Forgot. Look who's here then, eh? Look who's home."
Teddy's hair turned a bright blonde as he made some more happy noises and reached for his father. Remus couldn't help the grin that spread across his face as Dora handed his son to him. Teddy immediately snuggled into Remus's arms and shoulder as he cooed affectionately.
"Wotcher, Ted," he greeted the baby, swaying softly on the spot, "Missed you a lot."
"I think he missed you too," Dora replied as she stroked her son's hair, which was turning purple, "I've been trying to get him to sleep for hours, but when he realized you still weren't home, his hair color copied yours and he started to cry. He only stopped when we heard you downstairs."
"Oh, I'm sorry, son," Remus said, addressing Teddy even as he fleetingly wondered how easily the word "son" had come to him, "Daddy didn't want the nasty, bad people to find you."
Teddy gave a singular gurgle at his father.
"I'll take that to mean my apology's accepted," Remus laughed. Again, Teddy gave a happy cooing sound, and then, as his hair relaxed into it's natural black state, he closed his eyes, as green as his mother's, and with one tiny hand clutching at his father's shirt, he fell asleep. Smiling, Remus kissed the top of Teddy's head and gently settled him into his crib. He carefully unwound Teddy's fingers from his shirt as a little stuffed wolf that had once belonged to Dora snuggled into Teddy's arms. Remus put the blankets over them.
Straightening up, he found himself smiling at his glassy-eyed wife, a soft smile on her lips.
"There you are then, Mrs Lupin," he said, "Finally asleep. I'm quite sure he won't begiving you any trouble sleeping for at least a few hours."
"My hero," Dora replied, closing the gap between them and putting her arms around his neck as he wound his own around her waist, "What would I do without you?"
"Panic," Remus teased lightly, "Possibly trip over your own feet a couple of times too."
"Oh, haha," Dora replied, but she was still smiling.
"I'm sorry," Remus answered, "Didn't mean to offend you. Is there any way at all I could make it up to you?"
"I can think of a couple of ways," Dora said softly, giggling as she let her husband kiss her lovingly.
