Brainwaves

Bloody hell, Azkaban is colder than a bitch’s wit, Nymphadora Tonks thought, shivering as she climbed aboard the boat.

The island prison rapidly retreated into the fog, leaving the boat surrounded by the ebb and flow of the waves. Like breathing; in and out, she thought. No. More like grief; one wave crashing over the one before.

As far as she could see, there were just more waves. Endless wave after wave.

Endless as the dreary fog that never went away and cold as the falling snow.

Lulled into carelessness by the hypnotic motion of the water, she leaned over the edge. Small breakers lapped against the side of the boat and she counted:

Splash. Sirius, dead…

Splash. Remus, gone…

Splash. Mum, refusing to hide from Bellatrix…

Splash. Dad, waving away offers of Auror protection…

Splash. Remus, unreachable in a werewolf colony…

Splash. Guarding Azkaban, dementors everywhere…

Splash. Might never morph again...

Splash. Werewolf attacks…where the hell are you, Remus?

Splash. Dumbledore disappearing every time she drew guard duty at Hogwarts.

The boat finally bumped against the dock.

“Made it over the rough patches again, did ye?” greeted the ferryman, gripping her hand to pull her up. “Strong constitution yeh’ve got.”

She forced a smile. “Just stubborn,” she answered.

Blue eyes twinkling, he clapped a hand on her shoulder in a reassuring squeeze. “Stubbornness is strength developed by staying in the boat long enough to reach the other side.”
