Summary: The gift was simple, but would it be enough?
Author's Note Unbeta’d - mistakes are completely mine.

The jar had been a treasured keepsake - one of his mother’s perfume bottles - finely crafted and taken to the apothecary every year to be filled with her favorite mixture of scents. It was a pale shade of blue cut glass and distinctly reminded him not only of his mother, but also of the woman he now fancied. He knew that Dora would treasure such a gift, and he had decided for her birthday this year, that he would take the bottle of blue-cut glass to the apothecary and have the chemist mix a perfume of scents especially for Dora.

He chose the scents of vanilla and rose with a pinch of cinnamon. The perfect combination for a woman who was always full of surprises. The chemist made a note as to who it was for (so if she wanted more, it would be easy to fill the order), mixed the fragrance and filled the vial.

He felt his gift wasn’t much, but it would have to do. Being out of work for as long as he had, and with little inheritance left, meant he had little money to use to buy her nice things. He just hoped she’d like it.

She smiled as he handed her the simple package, and she unwrapped it with the enthusiasm of someone who had never had a gift before in her life. She lifted the small bottle out and opened it, smelling the sweet fragrance that wafted out. She smiled, dabbed some on, and stoppered the vial again before throwing her arms around his neck and kissing him thoroughly as the scent of her awakened all of his senses.

“I love it,” she cooed in his ear and he smiled at her.

“Do you really?” he asked, not believing she’d like the gift that much.

“Let me show you how much I love it,” she answered as she kissed him again.
