[eek! an actual post!]
I admit it -- I love kitchen toys: microwaves, blenders, apple peelers, food processors, creme brule' torches. If it "helps" in the creation of food, I want it; I need it; I must have it. (Hi, I'm Bob and I'm a kitchen toy-aholic.) But the one I'm lovin' the most lately (actually, ever since I got it last year) is my Food Saver.
For the uninformed, the Food Saver is a device that uses special plastic bags and containers into which food is placed and then sealed with a vacuum. It's fun and very useful. I especially love all the extra accessories that are available, like the mason jar sealer. For more info see
http://www.foodsaver.com.
But I digress.
Last night I got to really test how good this toy ... er crucial kitchen appliance is. I ate black-eyed peas. Let me be more precise. I ate the black-eyed peas. *sigh* Okay, I'll be even more clear.
Every year, I make black-eyed peas for New Year's Day; it's tradition. Every year, there are lot's of leftovers. Every year the leftovers end up tossed in the trash, because - no matter how well wrapped up they are - the black-eyed peas get dried out.
But not this year! This year -- January 11th, to be precise -- I food savered (yes, that is the technical term, so stop snickering) the leftover New Year's Day black-eyed peas and then put them in the freezer.
That! is what I ate for dinner last night. I just dropped the bag in a pot of boiling water and voila!
They were fresh: they were tasty: they were *not* dried out. Nor were they mushy, overcooked, or mashed. They were as good as the first day I served them.
And *that* is why I love my kitchen toys.
Do you like kitchen toys, too? Come on over and we can play with each other's toys!!
