Challenge - Theme: Snow. Pairing: Yesung/Kibum.

A slightly pinked face he’s not allowed to put a name to, fingers that are stiff and cold weaved into his own. Amidst the night sky that is stained with the fall of thick, pure flakes of snow, he looks down at the ground that's blanketed in white.

He counts the footsteps on the path ahead of him; faced in all directions, varying in many sizes. They are messy and hard to keep track of, slowly disappearing as the snow continues to fall upon them, but he knows new footsteps will be made.

The two of them will create them together.

“Look, Ye-”

Yesung blinks the flakes from his lashes and gently glares over at the younger man, a small smile eventually threading it’s way to his face. Kibum gasps when their eyes meet, and his cheeks somehow tint a darker shade when he resumes his silence and realizes his fault.

It’s hard to see in the dark, but Yesung manages.

“Beautiful,” Yesung says.

Kibum laughs and shakes his head. “You didn’t even look towards what I was pointing out.”

The street lights illuminate Kibum’s features perfectly as they pace down the street; his pale skin is painted by the rosy red hue that seeps from beneath his complexion. Without the light and the glare of the water, Yesung wouldn’t be able to tell the snow apart from Kibum’s cheek and eyes and soft, soft lips.

It takes Kibum by surprise when Yesung suddenly stops and leans over to kiss him briefly on the lips, stealing his breath and freezing the entirety of his functions. “You-”

“Shh,” Yesung grins. He reaches out with his free hand to brush away a stray flake from the corner of Kibum’s lips, tightening his grasp on Kibum’s hand.

They begin walking again, but Kibum consciously walks a little closer against Yesung’s side. The soft brush of their shoulders warms them inside, and the silent night leaves nothing but coldness and a light call of the wind now in their companionship.

“It’s cold,” Yesung comments, followed by a quick shiver. It runs down his spine and he shakes it off, turning to the younger man who’s walking with him hand in hand.

Kibum smiles to himself when he feels Yesung replace his right hand with his left in their interlocked fingers, and drapes his right arm over Kibum’s shoulder protectively.

Their endeavors don’t ever tend to last long. When daylight catches them off-guard, their safety proximity will be recreated for the eyes of society. A relationship that shouldn’t be known about; feelings that should be buried and frozen beneath the thick layers of snow.

When the snow melts, perhaps their feelings will, too.

“Do you want to watch sunrise with me?”

Hesitation runs through Kibum’s veins. When Yesung leans over to kiss him on the cheek, his lips lingering on the lobe of his ear, Kibum shivers and shuts his eyes tight, nodding.

Yesung smirks. “Good. I’ve always wanted to watch sunrise with you.”

“What if they wake up and realize we’re gone?” Kibum asks.

The older man shrugs, tugging Kibum closer and kissing him again. “Let’s just pretend they won’t ever wake up, okay? At least not tonight.”

“You’re running away from reality,” Kibum deadpans.

Yesung laughs. “For you, I’d run away from anything as long as I can keep you by my side.”

They reach the benches at the bridge of the mountain and finally they let each other go. Kibum settles on the bench and Yesung walks over to lean on the rail. From Yesung’s shadow, Kibum can tell that the other man is weary; tired, broken down, exhausted.

He doesn’t blame him. Secret, short-term relationships like theirs were never meant to last - never meant to see the light of day.

“Do I know you?” Kibum breaks the silence.

Yesung turns around and grins, shrugging. “I don’t know if you know me, but I know you. Aren’t you that man who’s getting married soon? To the mayor’s daughter.”

His heart stops beating and constricts in his chest.

“Beautiful,” Yesung smiles softly at him. “Truly beautiful.”

Kibum isn’t certain who or what Yesung is referring to, but he smiles, too. “I know you. You’re the mayor’s son, aren’t you? My fiances brother.”

“Stepbrother,” Yesung corrects. “The disgrace of the family, actually.”

Although it’s for a reason they both know, Kibum asks anyways. He likes hearing it. “Why?”

“I fell in love with a man.”

As always, Kibum cannot hide his childish grin when Yesung lowers himself beside him, reaching inside his coat pocket to find his hand and lacing their frozen fingers together again. “With who?”

Yesung purses his lips and narrows a single playful eye at the other. “Secret. No one can ever find out who it is. It’s between me and him, Kibum-ah.”

“Ahh,” Kibum nods slowly, using a bit of strength as he responds to the touch of their interlocked hands. “He’s a lucky guy to have your affection.”

The sun begins to appear from the far horizon, light shades of brown and yellow and orange simmering into the landscape ahead of them. Yesung tries to breath as slowly as he can, as if it would slow time, wishing they could stop time, and this is perhaps the most treacherous sunrise he’s ever had to experience.

It’s also the most beautiful one.

“No,” Yesung shakes his head, slightly surprised when he feels a weight falling on his shoulders.

Kibum has fallen asleep, his cheek resting against Yesung’s arm. The light falls on him perfectly and Yesung wonders how he’s ever going to bring himself to let go of this moment - of this man.

“I’m the lucky one.” He says, to no one in particular. After brief silence and roaming thoughts, he laughs and turns his gaze back to the rising sun.

Neither of them are very fortunate, but they are both lucky.

Lucky enough to have been in love before.
