Since my beloved 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 is dead, I need a new default lens. One of my complaints about the old lens was that it had a much too narrow angle of view. I was considering the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, which is much like my old lens but very, very wide.
Talking to one of my photographer friends, he suggested a more expensive lens, the EF-S 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM. It's $950, but is everything I need. It's essentially the same as the kit lens, but much faster, has image stabilization (once again, making it even faster), a much faster autofocus and better construction.
I need something, so why not get what I really want?
This also leaves room for a third lens at the narrow end, where I can get something relatively inexpensive at some point in the future.
