“A Doll House” by Henrik Isben was a fantastic read this week. I think I really liked this play because it relates to life in general. It’s not a crazy love story where everyone dies or a fairytale where everyone lives “happily ever after.” It’s a play that portrays life and character.
It’s time period is not that of today’s, but the issues everyone in the play faces are all well understood by today’s generation. Nora seemed to be Torvald’s trophy wife. She was pretty and was there simply to support him and she seemed happy in doing so. Torvald was the up and coming businessman. He was recently promoted and became in charge at the bank. He had the life. Krogstad had gotten himself into trouble, but was putting on a good show and seemingly trying to work past his mistake and hopefully work up the corporate ladder. Everyone seemed to lead their own perfect lives until Mrs. Linde came in and was offered a job at the bank. Krogstad knew she would take his place and he tried to stop it. We all do this even though we might deny it. If we have something good we don’t want to lose it and we will do everything in our power to keep it. Sometimes we do this even if it means that we have to bring other people down along the way.
At some point in life, when all the cards are laid down, we all show who we really are. It is the difficult times that bring out your true personality and ultimately shape who you become.
