Sex Toy Storage and Disposal

Please be forewarned that this post includes information that may be TMI of a sexual nature. If you're under 18 or whatever the age for such things is in your jurisdiction, you probably shouldn't read this. If you're related to me, you probably shouldn't read this. If you're over 18, you should think about whether or not you really want to know before you click on an lj-cut.

This is inspired by both norwich36's frank entry about vibrators and my own efforts to clean out my house.

You may remember that I was considering getting rid of my dresser. Well, I managed to pass it on to my mom, and I've found places for almost everything in or on it. The exception, as you might have guessed by now, are the sex toys.

I own two sex toys, the Silk 1 (mine's actually green), and another silicone dildo that came with a bullet vibe that Good Vibrations doesn't appear to carry anymore (and I bought it in store and not online, so I can't even look back through my saved email to find out what it was called). I don't like either one of them. The Silk 1 is too small, and the other one is too big. (I'm a bit like an X-rated Goldilocks that way.) This brings me to the first dilemma: selling/giving away used (or, in the language of car lots everywhere, "preowned") sex toys seems tacky. On the other hand, they are silicone, which means they can be boiled or sent through the dishwasher for sterilizing. So what do people do with sex toys they don't want anymore? Personally, if possible, I'd rather sell them than give them away so I can have some money to spend on something that's just right.

My second dilemma is this: where do I store sex toys? They used to live in the top drawer of my dresser, which was nice because they were out of sight, but just a step away from my bed. I don't have a real nightstand, just a small stool that holds several of my erotica collections, so keeping them in a nightstand drawer isn't a possibility. I put up one of those floating wall shelves where the dresser was to keep the things that lived on top of the dresser and really do need to be just about there, but I don't want my sex toys just sitting there. My mother comes in fairly often on Sundays, and even if she didn't and I didn't have housecleaners, I don't really want to look at them all the time. I've thought about the Devine Toy Box, but (a) I think it's ugly and (b) do I really need something that locks? A locking toy box seems to defeat my attempts to have things close at hand and easy to get to for spontaneous fun. A little googling took me to some other, mostly also ugly, storage solutions. I did find someone suggesting a plain old makeup bag, which might work for my aesthetic reasons, but it still might cause comment. For the moment, they're tucked at the back of one of the drawers in the hanging sweater organizer I bought to use for the things that used to be in the two dresser drawers I was still using, but I'll want a better, permanent solution when I get something I actually like.

sex, sex toys, uncluttering
