Best of the Year
Here are the five best books I read last year, with first lines (where I could find them online). Usually I just put these in alphabetical order by last name; this year, the best book is first and the other four are in alphabetical order.

Since I happen to have it sitting here (Thank you!) The first line of The Third Claw of God is "Later, much later, after I died, I tried to remember why."

Glad to have stumbled into reading this in one of my insomnia-manic midnight perusals of LJ. I had never heard of Naomi Kritzer-will definitely check her out. Do you have a suggestion of which book to read first. Is it a series?

She is excellent! Fires of the Faithful and Turning the Storm are a duology. She's also written a separate trilogy. These two made it into my favorite books that I keep on my shelf while the trilogy was just really good.
