Show Me How You Burlesque

Dec 11, 2010 17:03

People, let's talk about Burlesque. It is totally worth seeing - if you like this kind of thing. If you've seen the trailers and you ever watch movies, you know exactly how this movie goes.

They don't really make any effort to make it more credible than it really is, and what it is is really fun. It's full of cliches, but it's also full of Christina Aguilera being fascinated by women dancing in their underwear and then becoming one of them, while somewhat mentored by Cher and falling in love with Cam Gigandet. Not to mention Stanley Tucci having a hell of a lot of fun.

The most fascinating thing to me is how untethered to time it is. It takes place now - we see things outside the club with modern-day accents like current cars and cell phones - but that doesn't actually matter. Everything of importance takes place either in the club, which could have come out of the same world as Chicago's "All That Jazz," or between people where the setting doesn't matter.

The one big thing I would have changed was the camera work. It's not handheld, but the camera is always moving, just a little, and it's distracting.

For bandom people, one of the unnamed dancers looks exactly like a female Ryan Ross.

The bottom line is that if this movie looked at all like your kind of thing, you will like it. And you should go now, because there's no way it's staying in theaters for very long.
