Apparently I Am Going to Hold the Unpopular Opinion

If you're in bandom and you haven't already, go to Patrick's website and marvel at the terrible usability download both versions of "Spotlight."

I'll wait. You can come back to my opinion. )

The New Regrets version reminds me of some of the sounds off of Travie's Lazarus project, which is to say, very catchy, very smart, very now. it's got a fantastic sound, his voice sounds impeccable, seriously. There's a breakdown at the end that makes me wish the drums were crisper, if nothing else, but when the music comes back in fully, with the handclaps, that's a magic and awesome moment.

The Nostalgia version reminds me of some of the stuff The Cab's done, in a way, but it sounds so very much like Patrick. It reminds me, in a way, of Pavlove, which I love. Around 2:40ish, when that breakdown starts, that's my favorite part of that version. I love it, and I love the choral effect, but over-all, I think it's too close to FOB to really feel awesome.

I like it, don't get me wrong, but if he wants to distance himself from FOB, like I think Joe and Andy, and Pete have done, he should go with the New Regrets version, definitely. New Regrets sounds fresher, I think. But they're both very interesting.

Huh. I'm going to have to go listen to Lazarus again - I wasn't excited the first time, but if it's like this, maybe I will be totally into it now.

I think the other question about them that I've been thinking about (aside from the like FOB/new sound distinction) is that we haven't heard the whole album, so we don't know what fits best with the rest of it.

I really, really loved Lazarus when I first heard it. It has a really fantastic sound and sensibility about it, and for the music scene being what it is at this time, it's a very smart record, you know? But it does have some of the same sensibility, in so far as the sounds can be very related to each other. (Which doesn't surprise me, honestly.)

And right! That's a very good thing to point out, definitely. It's gonna be interesting to see what Patrick puts out.

You know what, this just occurred to me a while ago, but as I was listening to both versions, I realized that in a few small ways, they remind me of Pavlove. That sort of same...feel, I suppose? But yeah. Maybe it's just me?

I have had this comment sitting in my inbox for five months to remind me to download and listen to "Pavlove," which I finally did today. It does have the same kind of feel. I can definitely see the evolution from that to "Spotlight."

Oh maaann, if you had asked, I would have happily uploaded it for you! Pavlove's one of my favorites and I like the evolution, honestly!

Aww, thanks for the offer. It was more about me actually doing something about it than finding it!
