Oh, yes. Seriously, this was awesome. People saying there isn't enough CAPSLOCK in the world to say how much they loved it are not wrong.
To be honest, I could have done without the plot. I would have watched two hours of the characters just bantering and getting to know each other. The part where Bones is chasing Kirk around giving him shots while he tries to get everyone to understand it's an attack made me laugh so hard I had to take my glasses off and wipe the tears out of my eyes. I have never in my life laughed this hard at any Trek incarnation. I loved the audience reaction, too. (To give you an idea of the popularity, we were there at 10:50 on a Sunday morning, and the place was packed.)
Feminist Critic Brain Response: I was a little disappointed they didn't do much with Uhura. She started out strong, and then they bumped her level down a bit. And the scene of her and Spock in the turbolift where she says, "Tell me what you need": my feminist critic brain says she's just acting in service of a man; my romantic heart says yes, that's exactly what you do for the person you love.
My feminist critic brain also refers back to
Jezebel's post about how movie moms are the same age as their sons. I honestly thought Winona Ryder was going to be Spock's lover when we first saw her. She is in no way old enough to be his mother.
Superficial Response: I could take or leave Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine, but, OMG, are John Cho and Zoe Saldana hot. Karl Urban and Bruce Greenwood are also hot, but not quite deserving of the OMG. Anton Yelchin was adorable too, and now I'm excited that he's going to be Kyle Reese in T4.
Slasher Response: When Spock says "live long and prosper" and means "fuck you," I thought, "You are going to fall in love so hard." I don't know, though - I think they did an interesting job of making their relationship not as slashy as I would have expected from the original OTP.
