Oh, this is lovely! I'm usually not a fan of historical AUs for this pairing, but you've done it in a way that works so beautifully with their characters and hints at all their other relationships. Loved Lily's role, and the hopeful tone you've ended on despite the era.

Thank you! I'm really glad that you enjoyed this. I don't normally write historical AUs, so I was worried about this working.

I've always thought that the first war era has a WWII ambiance about it, but this felt much more WWI. I loved the feeling of a simpler time when hospitality and graciousness were more freely extended. This had a lovely feeling throughout, warm and human. The pacing was perfect for this, very easy and comfortable. Lovely, lovely work.

This is, indeed, truly lovely. And there was so much between the lines! You managed to convey the power of their friendship (and eventual relationship) without saying anything explicit.

Sirius' "battle fatigue" was interesting. On the one hand, like in canon, he certainly could be suffering from battle fatigue. Many men did. On the other hand that "no wife" comment made me half-wonder if there were not a little more to it. Could his sexuality have come into play there?

But what struck me most was their immediate connection. It wasn't overtly sexual, but the sexual tension (and, especially instant friendship) were certainly there.

Lily was great, too!

Oh, and for what it is worth, I very much loved this passage: These houses, he thought, all looked exactly the same. He could have been stepping into his mother’s house in Mosley, not a terrace five minutes’ walk from London Road Station. There was something about the stone front step, sturdy door and air of parsimony that greeted you as you entered the hallway. He glanced over at ( ... )

Oh thank you for this comment! It's really such a lovely comment to get.

I think that Sirius's sexuality possibly did come into play with his leaving the army, but I haven't got all the details of the universe worked out so I'm not sure how far exactly.

Thank you SO MUCH! This was absolutely perfect, just what I had in mind. I loved all the little details in this - Remus pressing his face against the cup, all the historical references like the range and the guard on the train, hotpot and the words 'dicky' (my Grandad says that!) and 'hellcat'. I loved Lily's character in this and the reference to the Weasleys living next door, as well as a hint at what may have happened to James. All three of them are very sympathetic and the whole thing was delightful, really lovely and well done. Thank you ever so much and merry Christmas! <3

Yay! I'm so happy that you like this! I had a lot of fun writing it, and getting this comment was so nice! I still say "dicky" - these words die hard in the North!

Thank you for the lovely comment, and Happy Christmas to you too!

Ahhh, wonderful! That was so sweet, and I loved Lily in it as well. While I like the story as the start of something, kind of like a promise, I did find myself wishing for a few more paragraphs (/pages, ahem). :) thanks for sharing!
